Abstract:The newly synthesized 5,10,15,20-tetra[3-(3-trifluoromethyl)phenoxy] porphyrin, TTFMPP, has been characterized using mass spectroscopy, 1 H-, 13 C-and 19 F-NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrophotometry, and cyclic voltammetry. The NMR confirmed the structure of the compound and the mass spectrum was in agreement with the proposed molecular formula. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of TTFMPP shows characteristic spectral patterns similar to those of tetraphenyl porphryin, with a Soret band at 419 nm and four Q bands at 515, 550, 590, and 648 nm. Protonation of the porphyrin with TFA resulted in the expected red shift of the Soret band. Excitation at 419 nm gave an emission at 650 nm. The quantum yield of the porphyrin was determined to be 0.08. Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the oxidation and reduction potentials of the new porphyrin. Two quasi-reversible one-electron reductions at -1.00 and -1.32 V and a quasi-reversible oxidation at 1.20 V versus the silver/silver chloride reference electrode with tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate as the supporting electrolyte in methylene chloride were observed.

Porphyrins are of interest in many applications that involve electron transfer and absorption of light, such as solar energy and photodynamic cancer therapy. The newly synthesized 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,4-dibenzyloxyphenyl)porphyrin, TDBOPP, was characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF/TOF high resolution mass spectrometry. Standard 1H NMR and 13C NMR experiments coupled with nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) experiments confirmed the structure of the compound. The expected M+ and [M+H]+ ions are observed in the MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrum. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of TDBOPP shows a Soret band at 424 nm and three Q bands at 519 nm, 556 nm, and 650 nm with molar absorptivity 3.6×105 cm−1m−1, 1.6×104 cm−1m−1, 1.0×104 cm−1m−1 and 5.3×103 cm−1m−1, respectively. Excitation at 424 nm gives emission at 650 nm. The quantum yield of the porphyrin is 0.11.

Abstract:The copper complex of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(3,4-dibenzyloxyphenyl)porphyrin (CuTDBOPP) was synthesized and characterized with electronic absorption spectroscopy and ESI high-resolution spectrometry. In the electronic spectrum, there was a shift in the Soret band from 424 nm to 420 nm that indicated that the insertion of the metal ion was successful. Additionally, the number of Q bands decreased from four peaks to a single peak at 541 nm. The molar absorptivity of the Soret and Q band are 3.4 × 10 5 cm −1 ·M −1 and 1.8 × 10 5 cm −1 ·M −1 , respectively. The ESI HRMS was in excellent agreement with simulated isotopic distribution spectra. CuTDBOPP was incorporated into a series of Gratzel cells where the open current voltage was recorded.
