Our aim was to evaluate the influence of pregermination treatments for overcoming the dormancy of P. aculeata seeds. The seeds were submitted to the following treatments: sample -intact seeds (T 1 ); mechanical scarification with water sandpaper no. 80, followed by room temperature water soaking for 12 and 24 hours (T 3 e T 4 , respectively); immersion in sulfuric acid for 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes (T 5 , T 6 , T 7 1 Eng a Agr a , Profª Drª, Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, UFERSA, Campus Caraúbas, Caraúbas, RN.
Palavras-chave: Invasão biológica, espécie exótica, caatinga AbstractThe work had as objectives to evaluate the influence of the light, temperature, and chemical scarification on the germination of seeds of S. virgata, species still little studied and that is invasive in several niches of the caatinga ecosystem. The seeds of S. virgata were collected in the municipal district of Natuba-PB in March/2008. Eight treatments were used as follows: intact seeds in the presence and absence of light, at 25ºC; intact seeds in the presence and absence of light, at 30ºC; submerged seeds in sulfuric acid for five minutes in the presence and absence of light, at 25ºC; submerged seeds in sulfuric acid for five minutes in the presence and absence of light, at 30ºC. The germination tests were accomplished in germination cameras under light and continuous darkness at constant temperatures of 25ºC and 30ºC, in a 12 hours photoperiod. The seeds were put to germinate in plastic boxes (gerbox) with filter paper. The seeds of S. virgata have tegument dormancy and show low germination tax when intact, which is a strategy for seed banks formation. The acid scarification increased germination percentage and speed germination index.

Aims: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the production of Tamarindus indica L. seedlings irrigated with saline water. Study Design: A randomized complete block design was used in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, whose factors were the electrical conductivity levels of the irrigation water. Place and Duration of Study: The work was conducted under protected environment conditions (greenhouse) at the Federal University of Campina Grande, Center for Agro-Food Sciences and Technology, Campus of Pombal-PB, Brazil, in the period from January and March 2017. Methodology: Effects of doses of 0, 100, 200 and 300 mg of nitrogen (N) dm-3 and electrical conductivity levels of the irrigation water (ECw) (0.3, 2.1, 3.7 and 5.2 dS m-1) on growth of Tamarindus indica L. have been studied. Results: The growth of the seedlings was reduced by the increase of the electrical conductivity of the irrigation water, however, irrigation with ECw water of 2.15 dS m-1, promotes acceptable reductions of 10% in the morphology of the tamarind tree. Conclusion: The use of nitrogen fertilization with urea did not attenuate the deleterious effects of irrigation water salinity or promoted improvements of the quality of the tamarind seedlings.
