RESUMO:Nesta pesquisa foi avaliada a atividade antimicrobiana e a capacidade de inibição da síntese de glucano in vitro do extrato da casca do fruto da romã (Punica granatum Linn.) sobre linhagens bacterianas de Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus sobrinus e Lactobacillus casei. Os ensaios foram realizados pelas técnicas de ágar-difusão em placas para determinação da Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) e técnica dos tubos inclinados para determinação da Concentração Inibitória Mínima de Aderência (CIMA) ao vidro, na presença de 5% de sacarose. Os mesmos procedimentos foram realizados com a clorexidina à 0,12%. As CIMs (mg/mL) do extrato da P. granatum frente ao S. mitis, S. mutans, S. sanguis, S. sobrinus e L. casei foram 1:32, 1:8, 1:8, 1:512, e 1:128, respectivamente. Para as CIMAs o extrato da P. granatum mostrou resultados melhores que a clorexidina, exceto para o S. mutans com achados semelhantes na diluição de 1:256. Os resultados mostram a potencialidade da P. granatum na inibição do crescimento bacteriano e síntese de glucano representada pela aderência ao vidro, sugerindo o emprego do extrato da romã, como meio alternativo, no controle desses microrganismos na formação do biofi lme.Unitermos: Punica granatum, atividade antimicrobiana, efeito antiaderente, biofi lme dental, Streptococcus.ABSTRACT: "In vitro antibacterial and antiadherence effect of the extract of the Punica granatum Linn. upon dental biofi lm microrganisms". In this study was evaluated the in vitro antibacterial activity and the inhibition of glucan sintesis of the fruit bark of Punica granatum Linn extract upon the following dental biofi lm bacteria: Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus sobrinus and Lactobacillus casei. The tests were carried out by inundation tecniques in Petri dishes to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and inclined tubes techniques to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Adherence to glass (MICA) at the presence of 5% sucrose. Tests with gluconate of chlorexidine (0.12%) were performed as controls. MICs of the P granatum extract dilutions (mg/mL) against S. mitis, S. mutans, S. sanguis, S. sobrinus e L. casei were 1:32, 1:8, 1:8, 1:512, and 1:128 respectively. For MICAs the P. granatum showed better results than chlorexidine, except for S. mutans with both substances showing similar results of 1:256. It can be concluded that the extract of the P. granatum has the potential to inhibit oral bacterial growth and glucan sintesis. The extract of the Punica granatum might be used as an effective antibacterial alternative agent against oral biofi lm bacteria.

Introdução: O ameloblastoma, neoplasia benigna derivada do epitélio odontogênico, é um tumor localmente invasivo e agressivo. Representa 11% de todos os tumores odontogênicos e, especificamente, 1% de todos os tumores odontogênicos epiteliais.Objetivo: Descrever um caso clínico de ameloblastoma unicístico (AU) de grande extensão, com 7 anos de acompanhamento.Relato do caso: Paciente do sexo feminino, de 13 anos de idade, foi referenciada à clínica de estomatologia exibindo uma lesão extensa em região de mandíbula direita. Radiograficamente, observou-se área radiolúcida bem delimitada que se estendia da região de corpo mandibular até o processo condilar, ocasionando expansão da cortical óssea, reabsorção radicular e deslocamento dos dentes 47 e 48. Posteriormente a biópsia incisional, o diagnóstico histopatológico foi de AU. Foi realizada descompressão e, 7 meses depois, a enucleação cirúrgica foi feita com a exodontia dos dentes 47 e 48.  Após 7 anos de acompanhamento, não foi observado nenhum sinal clínico de recorrência.Conclusão: A técnica de descompressão cirúrgica seguida da enucleação da lesão para tratamento de AU proporciona menor morbidade ao paciente e maior potencial de neoformação óssea.

Background Analyze the clinical, demographic, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features of oral lymphoepithelial cyst (OLEC). Methods Samples were retrospectively retrieved from five oral pathology services. Clinical and demographic data were collected from patient charts. Histopathological and immunohistochemical (CD3 and CD20) features were evaluated. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses (P ≤ .05). Results Seventy‐seven cases were found among a total of 146 150 specimens (0.05%). OLEC was predominantly diagnosed in females (70.1%). Mean patient age was 46.51 years. The lesions arose mainly on the lateral border of the tongue (40.3%), measured up to 1 cm (61.0%), and were asymptomatic (64.9%). Twenty‐four lesions (31.2%) were white. Forty‐one cases (53.2%) presented lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate with no specific arrangement. The cystic lining was composed of a non‐keratinized stratified epithelium (59.7%) presenting hyperplasia (39.0%). Connection with the surface, epithelium was found in 23 cases (29.9%) and 31 (40.3%) cases had two or more cystic cavities. The lumen content was predominantly desquamated cells (48.1%). Subgemmal neurogenous plaque was found in 11/42 (26.2%) cases involving the tongue. CD20+ cells predominated in 36/63 cases (57.2%), and lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate was not always continuous around the cystic cavity (52.4%). Conclusion Lymphoepithelial cyst is an uncommon lesion of the oral cavity. The present study offers the largest sample of OLEC for which clinical, demographic, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features were evaluated. The clinical and demographic findings were similar to those described in previous reports, but the microscopic analyses revealed interesting aspects of the cystic epithelium and the lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate in OLEC.

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge level of dentists about oral cancer (OC) in Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil. Material and Methods: It was an observational, transversal, descriptive and analytical study. It was applied 200 structured forms. The sample was chosen for convenience. Statistical associations were performed using the Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests (P<0.05). Results: Of the 200 interviewed dentists, 66% (n=132) were women, the prevalent age group was 21-40 years (49.5%), 47% work at the private sector and 39% concluded their graduation 20 years ago. Oral squamous cell carcinoma was cited as the most common histopathologic type of OC (65.5%), and the most common anatomical site of OC was tongue (53.4%). The main risk factors cited for the developing of OC were licit and/or illicit drugs (99%), heredity (75.9%), dental problems (74.9%) and sun exposure (74.4%). There was a significant statistically association between the variables tobacco and/or alcohol use and gender of the dentists (P=0.001), between the knowledge level about OC and its histopathologic type and the more affected anatomical site (p=0.012 and p=0.034, respectively). Conclusion: The level of knowledge of dentists about OC is still insufficient for the performance of early diagnosis. Therefore, further discussions about this theme in dentistry schools should be conducted in order to train qualified professionals for this type of diagnosis.
