SUMMARY Contagious equine metritis 1977 was reproduced in pony mares using cultures of the Gram‐negative coccobacillus aetiologically associated with the disease. Variability in clinical response was observed in the first of 2 experiments, with the presence of semen, either alone or in an extender, appearing to potentiate the pathogenicity of the challenge strain of the organism. The experimental disease was characterised by a variable degree of vaginal discharge and concomitant inflammatory changes involving the cervix and vagina. Although all of the affected mares recovered spontaneously, a high percentage continued to harbour the Gram‐negative coccobacillus in their genital tracts for variable periods after challenge. Shedding of the organism was either relatively constant or intermittent and was not solely related to the oestrous period. Cytological examination of smears of cervical and urethral swabs was of diagnostic value only during the clinical phase of the infection. There was evidence that reinfection of mares could occur after an interval of 2 weeks. RÉSUMÉ La métrite contagieuse 1977 fut reproduite chez des poneys femelles en utilisant des cultures du Coccobacille Gram négatif étiologiquement responsable de la maladie. Une variabilité des réponses cliniques fut observée au cours de la première des deux expériences, notamment on observa que le sperme, soit pur soit dilué dans un milieu conservateur, paraissait potentialisé le pouvoir pathogène de l'agent incriminé. La maladie expérimentale était caractérisée par un degré variable de secrétion vaginale et par des changements inflammatoires concommittents au niveau du cervix et du vagin. Toutes les juments infectées eurent une guérison clinique spontanée mais un pourcentage élevé d'entre elles, continua d'herbéger le Coccobacille Gram négatif dans leur appareil génital durant un temps variable. La présence de l'organisme fut tantot constante tantot intermittente et ne parut pas exclusivement dépendre de la phase oestrale au moment du prélèvement. L'examen cytologique des frottis et des écouvillonnages urétraux parut n'avoir de valeur diagnostique que durant la phase clinique de l'infection. On a acquis la preuve que des réinfestations peuvent se produire après un intervalle de deux semaines. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Contagiöse equine Metritis 1977 wurde bei Ponystuten mit Kulturen des gramnegativen Coccobacillus hervorgerufen, der aetiologisch mit der Krankheit in Zusammenhang gebracht wird. Die Krankheitserscheinungen variierten im ersten von zwei Experimenten, wobei die Anwesenheit von Samen, nativ oder mit einem Verdünner, die Pathogenität des verwendeten Stammes zu akzentuieren schien. Die experimentelle Erkrankung war gekennzeichnet durch einen Scheidenausfluss verschiedenen Grades und begleitenden, entzündlichen Veränderungen in Cervix und Vagina. Obgleich alle erkrankten Stuten sich spontan erholten, beherbergte ein hoher Prozentsatz den Coccobacillus weiterhin für eine variierende Dauer im Genitaltrakt.
