In this article, a thesis has been claimed that school failure – especially in mathematics – is still present and remain a pedagogical challenge for the education. In the substantiation of the thesis, a set of arguments resulting from literary analysis and available findings, including thematic reports, has been quoted. The rank of the phenomenon and the scale of the problem, proving a “plague of mathematical illiteracy”, has been signalized. Following D. Firsh’s advice, an attempt to answer the question “What is mathematics? What is it about?” has been taken. Thus, mathematics has been presented as science and as an academic subject. The peculiarity of mathematical education has been noted. It has been reminded that the title theme should occupy a deserved place in academic research, especially of applied nature
The aim of the article is to analyze and present the teacher’s roles in moThe aim of the article is to analyse and present the teacher’s roles in modern school, in comparison to the tutor, coach, mentor, and trainer. The article shows the need to change the meaning of the role of a specialist teacher in a given subject, to a mentor using the tools of a coach or a tutor supporting the development of the mentee. The author introduces the social competences of a modern mathematics teacher and provides in-depth insights into their specificity. It raises the need to change the way of teaching in order to improve the effects of work at school, but also draws attention to succumbing to fashion for a given method and applying its innovativeness without a deeper insight into the legitimacy of its implementation.
This text contributes to the debate on the change in the way of teaching mathematics as it responds to the shifts caused by the transition to distance learning during the pandemic. The author analyses the conclusions of contemporary publications and international research alongside teaching experiences related to various aspects of the functioning of mathematics teachers, the efficacy and quality of their work as well as the issue of their education and improvement. In the course of literature research, probing questions on the pandemic-era school failures occurring in mathematics have clearly highlighted inequalities in the education system. The author analyses the application of ICT in distance learning, which has significantly stimulated processes and phenomena linked to the functioning of an individual in schooling. The time of the pandemic has exposed the shortcomings of the Polish education system and necessitated reflection on the future of Polish schooling. When the magnitude of failures in mathematics does not decrease but remains constant, it is imperative that the reason why it is the leading subject of school failures is determined. Therefore, it is important to establish the new role of the mathematics teacher in the process of changes prompted by distance learning.
