Este trabajo aporta una mirada alterna sobre la modificación cefálica artificial entre los mayas, concretamente utilizando las observaciones de los cronistas que aún la vieron en la época Colonial. Sin querer, ellas nos comunican motivaciones íntimamente vinculadas con el rol que una vez tuvo la costumbre cefálica dentro de la cosmovisión y la ritualidad cotidiana de los mayas prehispánicos; así, estos testimonios constituyen puntos de partida invaluables para comprender los motivos culturales profundos que el modelado cefálico satisfacía originalmente.Por último, contrastamos y discutimos la información de las fuentes conjuntamente con el registro craneológico en siete series coloniales del territorio cultural maya. Los resultadosconfirman que el modelado cefálico pronto pierde vigencia en los centros urbanos con mayor presencia europea al mismo tiempo que se observa su pervivencia en los espacios rurales y selváticos más aislados, como los paraderos remotos de la selva lacandona.
Resumen: En los primeros años de la creación de la diócesis de Yucatán, en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, hubo una notoria ausencia de capitulares. Esta situación se denomina cabildo eclesiástico incompleto, en que apenas figuraban unos pocos integrantes del capítulo, tenía como consecuencia la concentración de poder y de jurisdicción en unos pocos miembros, que ejercían varias funciones de manera simultánea. Este vacío que presentaba el cabildo eclesiástico, sin embargo, tendería a fortalecer los lazos entre ellos dado que se repartían las funciones y responsabilidades. La carencia de recursos económicos y la escasa importancia de la diócesis de Yucatán contribuyó a que los cargos capitulares fueran poco atractivos y que, al mismo tiempo, provocara que el número de prebendados a menudo fuera reducido. En este trabajo se pretenden analizar las complicaciones que se originaron con el establecimiento y conformación del cabildo catedralicio y para ello, se van a explicar las distintas problemáticas ocurridas en el seno del mismo.
