Mais ce critère ne permet d'établir que la manifestation de la conscience réfléchie, son absence en revanche n'établit rien, car on ne sait alors distinguer entre une absence définitive de conscience réfléchie et une absence du travail de conscientisation qui permet de passer d'une conscience directe à une conscience réfléchie. Je peux être conscient en acte, sans pour autant être réflexivement conscient, ce qui implique que ce que je vis peut très bien ne pas m'apparaître dans un premier temps, puisque la condition pour que cela m'apparaisse -à moi qui l'ai pourtant vécu- est que je l'ai réfléchi. Cette dimension du conscientisable suppose un travail cognitif qui, s'il n'est pas déjà effectué, doit être accomplit pour passer à la verbalisation. L'entretien d'explicitation et les techniques d'explicitation phénoménologique visent précisément à créer les conditions de ce passage.
