De nombreuses tentatives municipalistes contemporaines se réfèrent à Murray Bookchin, le principal théoricien du municipalisme libertaire et du communalisme. Beaucoup de ces tentatives, bien qu’elles renouvellent parfois profondément la vie locale, ont cependant du mal à se défaire du cadre de la souveraineté municipale. Si elles cherchent de façon innovante à faire fonctionner autrement les institutions municipales, elles restent distinctes du communalisme de Bookchin qui implique la mise en place de contre-institutions fondées sur l’autogouvernement des assemblées populaires citoyennes. Les pratiques récentes qui se revendiquent des « communs » remettent ce débat en scène. Associé à la logique des communs, comme formes d’auto-organisations socio-économiques, le communalisme est en train de se redéfinir.
