« Quelles sont les conditions qui font que certains discours fonctionnent comme discours littéraires ? ». Telle était la question, destinée à remplacer le sempiternel « Qu’est-ce que la littérature ? », qui était annoncée dans l'édition originale de Pour une théorie de la production littéraire (Maspero, 1966). Pour poser adéquatement cette question fondamentale et y répondre, Pierre Macherey, alors élève de Louis Althusser, réfléchissait en philosophe à la littérature et proposait l’une des réflexions les plus originales des années 1960 sur les rapports entre le littéraire et le social. Pour une théorie de la production littéraire, qui a pourtant marqué toute une génération de théoriciens dans le monde anglo-saxon, n’avait jamais été réédité en français. Cette lacune est désormais comblée grâce à une édition revue et enrichie d'une préface de Terry Eagleton et d'une postface inédite de Pierre Macherey.
