Résumé Résumé : Cette contribution distingue et articule trois concepts de l’autorité significatifs pour l’enseignement scolaire : i) l’autorité pédagogique comprise comme moyen de la conduite de classe ; ii) l’autorité statutaire conférée à l’enseignant en vertu de la dimension collective de l’éducation, et iii) l’autorité liée à la transmission culturelle. Cette étude n’ignore pas la mise en question de l’autorité dans la seconde moitié du XX e siècle ; elle saisit au contraire cette occasion pour souligner ce qu’il peut y avoir de contingent dans l’usage de l’autorité pédagogique ; surtout, elle s’appuie sur la remise en cause de l’autorité à la lumière de l’individualisme moderne pour se demander en quel sens l’autorité doit être considérée comme une constante de la pratique éducative.
