An attempt is made to account for the lack of relationship between the Accurate Empathy (AE) scale and subjective perceptions of empathy. Taperecorded segments of empathic interactions with 22 normal Ss are rated on subjective empathy, the AE scale, and nine objective and four subjective interviewer behaviors. Only expression of interest or involvement is found to relate to both judged and subjective ratings of empathy; verbal dominance and quantity of words relate only to the AE scale; and clarity of expression relates to SB' perceptions of empathy. Questions are raised regarding the construct validity of the AE scale.
