Objective: To determine the prevalence, morphologic characteristics, associations, and frequency of features reported to predict growth of choroidal nevi in a large population-based sample. Methods: A total of 3654 subjects aged 49 to 97 years participating in the Blue Mountains Eye Study had a detailed eye examination, including photography of 6 standard retinal fields. Nevi were graded from photographs. Results: Nevi were present in 6.5% of the population (n = 232), and were distributed equally between eyes. There was a slight decrease in nevus prevalence with increasing age. Nevus prevalence was higher in women than men, but this difference was not statistically significant. The mean nevus diameter was 1.25 mm (SD, 0.72 mm; range, 0.5 to Ͼ4.5 mm). Eighty-seven percent of nevi were blue gray
A 77-year-old artist having endocapsular phacoemulsification surgery and intraocular lens implantation illustrated her visual impressions of the procedure in 6 stages, from draping to lens implantation. Her illustrations and commentary indicate that she experienced clear visualization of instruments and colorful abstract imagery. These paintings were shown to 30 consecutive patients to assess their usefulness in preoperatively informing and preparing patients for surgery. With the widespread use of local and topical anesthesia, it is pertinent to the ophthalmic surgeon to understand what patients may seen when vision is retained during the procedure.
Low-dose systemic tacrolimus is a safe and effective treatment of some patients with severe AKC, which is refractory to conventional treatment. Such patients need careful monitoring for side effects, and the long-term benefits need to be assessed as part of a clinical trial.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
