Choroidal Nevi in a White Population

Abstract: Objective: To determine the prevalence, morphologic characteristics, associations, and frequency of features reported to predict growth of choroidal nevi in a large population-based sample. Methods: A total of 3654 subjects aged 49 to 97 years participating in the Blue Mountains Eye Study had a detailed eye examination, including photography of 6 standard retinal fields. Nevi were graded from photographs. Results: Nevi were present in 6.5% of the population (n = 232), and were distributed equally between eyes.… Show more

“…4,8,15 In our study, the naevi were uniformly concentrated in the posterior pole. Both the numerical distribution and the merged fundus drawings demonstrated that choroidal naevi have a predilection for the macular region, without any significant nasotemporal or superoinferior asymmetry.…”

“…In a clinic-based study by Shields et al, 23 the mean naevus diameter was 5.1 mm, whereas the naevi in the population-based Blue Mountains Eye Study had a mean diameter of 1.25 mm. 4 In this study, 40% of the patients had been referred by ophthalmologists in practice and the remainder had been diagnosed in our department on routine examination or during treatment of other eye diseases.…”

“…Eye color, skin color and sun-induced skin damage had no association with choroidal nevi in an Australian study. 38 Thus, although cutaneous nevi, especially atypical nevi, are the strongest risk factors for cutaneous melanoma 39,40 the nature of the relationships between cutaneous and ocular nevi and ocular nevi and ocular melanoma is moot.…”
