Obwohl inzwischen mehr als 25 Jahre seit der Veröffentlichung von Franklin Mendels' Pionier-Aufsatz zur "Proto-Industrialisierung" vergangen sind, hält -so scheint es -die Forschung und die Debatte zu diesem Thema mit unverminderter Lebhaftigkeit an. Jahr für Jahr erscheinen in zahlreichen Ländern Monographien und Aufsätze zu bestimmten Regionen, Orten oder Branchen, finden Kolloquien statt und werden Sammelbände publiziert. 1 Gewiß besteht die Gefahr, daß die weitgehende Akzeptanz und vielfältige Verwendung des Terminus 'Proto-Industrialiserung' dazu führt, daß die analytische Schärfe des Konzepts geringer wird. Daß dies keineswegs eine zwangsläufige Konsequenz ist, mögen u.a. die hier versammelten Aufsätze belegen. Freilich sind die theoretischen und vor allem die empirischen Beiträge zu diesem Forschungsfeld inzwischen so zahlreich, daß es immer schwieriger wird, es in seiner Gesamtheit zu überblicken. Deshalb mag es nützlich sein, es nach einigen Haupt-Aspekten zu gliedern -obwohl einer der fruchtbarsten Impulse des forschungsstrategischen Konzepts 'Proto-Industrialiserung' dahin ging, die Trennung zwischen verschiedenen Teilgebieten der Wirtschafts-und Sozialgeschichte zu überwinden und insbesondere Gewerbe-, Agrar-, Bevölkerungs-und Familiengeschichte zusammenzuführen. Immerhin lassen sich pragmatisch mehrere Brennpunkte der Debatte und der empirischen Forschung unterscheiden. Für die ökonomische Analyse der Proto-Industrialisierung steht der Beitrag Ulrich Pfisters in diesem Heft. Zu den demographischen Aspekten wurde anderwärts eine Zwischenbilanz gezogen. 2 Hier seien einleitend zunächst einige Fragen aus der spezifisch sozialgeschichtlichen Debatte um die Proto-Industrialisierung herausgegriffen. Es folgen Überlegungen zur Bedeutung des politisch-institutionellen Kontexts. Abschließend sei der Blick auf die Heimarbeit in der gegenwärtigen transnationalen Wirtschaft gelenkt -in der 1 F.
