We present a loophole-free violation of local realism using entangled photon pairs. We ensure that all relevant events in our Bell test are spacelike separated by placing the parties far enough apart and by using fast random number generators and high-speed polarization measurements. A high-quality polarization-entangled source of photons, combined with high-efficiency, low-noise, single-photon detectors, allows us to make measurements without requiring any fair-sampling assumptions. Using a hypothesis test, we compute p-values as small as 5.9 × 10−9 for our Bell violation while maintaining the spacelike separation of our events. We estimate the degree to which a local realistic system could predict our measurement choices. Accounting for this predictability, our smallest adjusted p-value is 2.3 × 10−7. We therefore reject the hypothesis that local realism governs our experiment.

It cannot with certainty predict the outcome of all single events, but instead it predicts probabilities of outcomes. This probabilistic nature of quantum theory is at odds with the determinism inherent in Newtonian physics and relativity, where outcomes can be exactly predicted given sufficient knowledge of a system. Einstein and others felt that quantum mechanics was incomplete. Perhaps quantum systems are controlled by variables, possibly hidden from us [2], that determine the outcomes of measurements. If we had direct access to these hidden variables, then the outcomes of all measurements performed on quantum systems could be predicted with certainty. De Broglie's 1927 pilot-wave theory was a first attempt at formulating a hidden variable theory of quantum physics [3]; it was completed in 1952 by David Bohm [4,5]. While the pilot-wave theory can reproduce all of the predictions of quantum mechanics, it has the curious feature that hidden variables in one location can instantly change values because of events happening in distant locations. This seemingly violates the locality principle from relativity, which says that objects cannot signal one another faster than the speed of light. In 1935 the nonlocal feature of quantum systems was popularized by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen [6], and is something Einstein later referred to as "spooky actions at a distance" [7]. But in 1964 John Bell showed that it is impossible to construct a hidden variable theory that obeys locality and simultaneously reproduces all of the predictions of quantum mechanics [8]. From dice to modern electronic circuits, there have been many attempts to build better devices to generate random numbers. Randomness is fundamental to security and cryptographic systems and to safeguarding privacy. A key challenge with random-number generators is that it is hard to ensure that their outputs are unpredictable. For a random-number generator based on a physical process, such as a noisy classical system or an elementary quantum measurement, a detailed model that describes the underlying physics is necessary to assert unpredictability. Imperfections in the model compromise the integrity of the device. However, it is possible to exploit the phenomenon of quantum non-locality with a loophole-free Bell test to build a random-number generator that can produce output that is unpredictable to any adversary that is limited only by general physical principles, such as special relativity. With recent technological developments, it is now possible to carry out such a loophole-free Bell test. Here we present certified randomness obtained from a photonic Bell experiment and extract 1,024 random bits that are uniformly distributed to within 10. These random bits could not have been predicted according to any physical theory that prohibits faster-than-light (superluminal) signalling and that allows independent measurement choices. To certify and quantify the randomness, we describe a protocol that is optimized for devices that are characterized by a low per-trial violation of Bell inequalities. Future random-number generators based on loophole-free Bell tests may have a role in increasing the security and trust of our cryptographic systems and infrastructure.

We introduce probability estimation, a broadly applicable framework to certify randomness in a finite sequence of measurement results without assuming that these results are independent and identically distributed. Probability estimation can take advantage of verifiable physical constraints, and the certification is with respect to classical side information. Examples include randomness from single-photon measurements and device-independent randomness from Bell tests. Advantages of probability estimation include adaptability to changing experimental conditions, unproblematic early stopping when goals are achieved, optimal randomness rates, applicability to Bell tests with small violations, and unsurpassed finite-data efficiency. We greatly reduce latencies for producing random bits and formulate an associated rate-tradeoff problem of independent interest. We also show that the latency is determined by an information-theoretic measure of nonlocality rather than the Bell violation.

Recent experiments [1,2] have reached detection efficiencies sufficient to close the detection loophole, testing the Clauser-Horne (CH) version of Bell's inequality. For a similar future experiment to be completely loophole-free, it will be important to have discrete experimental trials with randomized measurement settings for each trial, and the statistical analysis should not overlook the possibility of a local state varying over time with possible dependence on earlier trials (the "memory loophole"). In this paper, a mathematical model for such a CH experiment is presented, and a method for statistical analysis that is robust to memory effects is introduced. Additionally, a new method for calculating exact p-values for martingale-based statistics is described; previously, only non-sharp upper bounds derived from the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality have been available for such statistics. This improvement decreases the required number of experimental trials to demonstrate non-locality. The statistical techniques are applied to the data of [1] and [2] and found to perform well.

Abstract. In the well-studied (2, 2, 2) Bell experiment consisting of two parties, two measurement settings per party, and two possible outcomes per setting, it is known that if the experiment obeys no-signaling constraints, then the set of admissible experimental probability distributions is fully characterized as the convex hull of 24 distributions: 8 Popescu-Rohrlich (PR) boxes and 16 local deterministic distributions. Furthermore, it turns out that in the (2, 2, 2) case, any nonlocal nonsignaling distribution can always be uniquely expressed as a convex combination of exactly one PR box and (up to) eight local deterministic distributions. In this representation each PR box will always occur only with a fixed set of eight local deterministic distributions with which it is affiliated. In this paper, we derive multiple practical applications of this result: we demonstrate an analytical proof that the minimum detection efficiency for which nonlocality can be observed is η > 2/3 even for theories constrained only by the no-signaling principle, and we develop new algorithms that speed the calculation of important statistical functions of Bell test data. Finally, we enumerate the vertices of the no-signaling polytope for the (2, n, 2) "chained Bell" scenario and find that similar decomposition results are possible in this general case. Here, our results allow us to prove the optimality of a bound, derived in Barrett et al.[1], on the proportion of local theories in a local/nonlocal mixture that can be inferred from the experimental violation of a chained Bell inequality.

The Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality is a constraint that local hidden variable theories must obey. Quantum Mechanics predicts a violation of this inequality in certain experimental settings. Treatments of this subject frequently make simplifying assumptions about the probability spaces available to a local hidden variable theory, such as assuming the state of the system is a discrete or absolutely continuous random variable, or assuming that repeated experimental trials are independent and identically distributed. In this paper, we do two things: first, show that the CHSH inequality holds even for completely general state variables in the measure-theoretic setting, and second, demonstrate how to drop the assumption of independence of subsequent trials while still being able to perform a hypothesis test that will distinguish Quantum Mechanics from local theories. The statistical strength of such a test is computed.

We report correlation measurements on two 9 Be + ions that violate a chained Bell inequality obeyed by any local-realistic theory. The correlations can be modeled as derived from a mixture of a local-realistic probabilistic distribution and a distribution that violates the inequality. A statistical framework is formulated to quantify the local-realistic fraction allowable in the observed distribution without the fair-sampling or independent-and-identical-distributions assumptions. We exclude models of our experiment whose local-realistic fraction is above 0.327 at the 95 % confidence level. This bound is significantly lower than 0.586, the minimum fraction derived from a perfect ClauserHorne-Shimony-Holt inequality experiment. Furthermore, our data provides a device-independent certification of the deterministically created Bell states.Recently several groups have reported loophole-free tests of local realism with Bell's theorem [1], rejecting with high confidence theories of local realism [2][3][4]. While these experiments falsify the idea that nature obeys local realism, they are limited in the extent to which their data differs from local realism. Chained Bell inequality (CBI) [5] experiments can show greater departures from local realism in the following sense: Elitzur, Popescu, and Rohrlich [6] described a model of the distribution of outcomes measured from a quantum state as a mixture of a local-realistic distribution, which obeys Bell's inequalities, and another distribution that does not. Following their convention, we call these distributions "local" and "non-local." According to Ref.
