The pumped-storage power stations are playing important roles for the balances of the voltage and frequency and the stabilization of the grid. Generally, the static frequency converter (SFC) control systems based on thyristors in accordance with Load Commutation Inverter (LCI) are used to start up the synchronous generator/motors in pumped-storage power stations. However, this kind of the SFC installations has problems such as complicated structure, bulky size, low reliability and serious harmonics. In accordance with the practice project, a novel 30MW SFC start-up system based on IGCT five level converters for pumped-storage power stations with 300MWsynchronous generator/motor, the topology of the novel SFC is presented. The simulation on the novel SFC control system is studied, provided the valuable theoretic and technique basis for the system implement. The advantages of the novel SFC control system are outlined in this paper.
