Amateur boxing practiced at the Olympic Games has been evolving in conditions of safety for its athletes. The most common injuries are head wounds and lacerations, brain concussions and fractures. However, professional boxing has not kept up with this trend of revising rules and promoting greater safety, turning their athletes prone to severe injuries, especially head and neck injuries. The knowledge of epidemiology and biomechanics of boxing injuries may allow athletes and coaches to anticipate injuries and adopt effective prevention strategies.
Low back pain originating from lumbar facet joints or zygapophyseal joints has been identified as a potential cause of low back pain. Facet osteoarthritis, a degenerative pathology, is the most common cause of facet pain, and its prevalence increases with age. Facet syndrome is a frequent diagnosis in rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics athletes, surfing, bodyboarding, and yoga, due to its characteristic repetitive and / or maintained movements of hyperextension and rotation of the lumbar spine. The facet syndrome does not yet reach consensus from its diagnosis to the therapeutic strategies adopted, being still poorly understood, and probably underdiagnosed, which implies the need for further investigation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
