In this qualitative study, we intend to discuss how adolescent students in a Brazilian public school classroom define their body image and personalize the themes beauty standards and fatness. Grounded on a critical approach to language teaching, these two social themes were problematized in eight lessons of Ensino Médio (secondary education). The discussion of the empirical material suggests that (1) body image is strongly connected to gendered relations, making life experiences of men and women different based on the bodies they have, and (2) beauty standard and fatness are strongly related to students’ lives since twelve out of nineteen students personalized the themes by telling oppressive stories they went through because of their bodies.
In the second half of 2014, the first author of this article worked with the issues race/racism and language in the discipline of English Oral Practice 2 of an English Teacher Education course (Letras-Inglês) at a university. In this article, we sought to discuss the conceptions about language-beyond language as a system and as a means of communication-, which thirteen students built throughout the semester. In order to make this discussion, we bring the voices that constitute the empirical material of this study to dialogue with the voices of authors that theorize about language in a critical perspective. The empirical material problematized in this article is the participants' oral reports on language, which lasted from three to five minutes and were audio recorded. Because it is an activity situated in its natural environment and because we interpret it in terms of the meanings that the participants constructed, this is an interpretative study. The discussion indicates that, in the reports, they chose themes that challenge the traditional conception of language as abstract, homogeneous, and pure, which is reflected on grammars and dictionaries. Besides, it suggests that there was a movement towards the realization that linguistic issues are closely related to questions of power and that they intimately affect the construction of our subjectivities and the social world.
