Bosnia and Herzegovina has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing quarantine and other social distancing measures. These measures, however, have mental, social, and economic consequences on diet and food behaviors. The Bosnian case is particularly pertinent since the country has one of the highest global mortality rates relative to its population. In addition, its health system is fragmented and under-resourced. Consequently, in this study, we analyze the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Bosnians’ behaviors relating to food. It is based on an online survey performed during October–November 2020 with 3133 adult respondents. The statistical analysis encompassed descriptive statistics (means, percentages, and frequencies), as well as cluster analysis. The results reveal that the pandemic transformed consumers’ shopping behaviors and food sourcing, reducing shopping frequency and increasing food bought on each trip. Furthermore, there was an increase in the consumption of local food items due to food safety concerns. Additionally, the pandemic improved the awareness of Bosnians towards food with a decrease in food waste. Regarding diets, Bosnians tried to have healthier diets during the pandemic. Therefore, COVID-19 might have opened a ‘window of opportunity’ to promote the shift towards more sustainable food consumption and lifestyles.
The paper explores the ownership structure of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which fell into a debt crisis due to business failures, in order to indicate the differences between male and female entrepreneurs. We conducted the empirical research on a sample of 186 small and medium-sized loss-making enterprises in the Republic of Serbia. The results obtained by descriptive statistical analysis of the observed sampleshow that the participation of female companies among loss-making enterprises is considerably low. The ratio of companies owned by women and those owned by men was 18.8%: 81.2%. Furthermore, we have recorded a significant difference in the amounts of debt, indicating that female companies have significantly lower debt rates when compared to those owned by men. The findings of this research can be applied as a strategic framework for policymakers to encourage female entrepreneurship.
The coronavirus pandemic has caused a change of tourist habits, including turning more to domestic destinations. Serbian travel culture is specific, because most travelers choose sea destinations, given that Serbia is a continental country. Considering the number of natural resources along with accommodation capacities, it is necessary to work more on the promotion of rural tourism, in order to change the awareness and habits of travelers. The research conducted for this purpose addressed the travel habits of domestic tourists in their own country and showed that there are great opportunities in this regard to increase the number of guests in rural tourism, which will become permanent and use other benefits a rural household can provide. It also represents the opportunity to revitalize abandoned and devastated areas and affects the economic well-being of the whole region and even the whole country.
In order for the processes of environment protection and improvement in the Republic of Serbia to be more efficient, certain financial investments are necessary. After an introductory overview, the aim of the research was presented, which is to show correlation between costs and tax revenues in the field of environmental protection. The linear regression model and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used for the analyses. The paper presents economic instruments in the field of environmental protection for the period 2009-2018. Data obtained from the National Statistical Office were used. The state of the environment, as well as the goals related to European integration with the opening of Chapter 27, show that the presented data relating to the environment in the Republic of Serbia are very worrying and represent one of the key problems for policy implementation. The obtained results showed that there is a significant degree of correlation (r = 0.887). The current situation indicates that special attention should be paid to this topic, especially in terms of finding mechanisms for providing the necessary financial funds.
