Biodegradable copolyester/starch blends-preparation, mechanical properties, wettability, biodegradation course Summary-A set of blends of an aromatic-aliphatic copolyester containing 35 mol. % of aromatic ester units and plasticized wheat starch has been prepared. The copolyester used in this process was synthesized by polycondensation of the product of solvolysis of polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) from disposed beverage bottles by an aqueous solution of lactic acid. The blends copolyester/starch were characterized by their tensile strength and wetting behavior. Biodegradability of the blends was tested by using of mixed culture of microorganisms of digested sludge from wastewater treatment plant under anaerobic thermophilic conditions (55 o C).
Anaerobic processes for the treatment of plastic materials waste represent versatile and effective approach in environmental protection and solid waste management. In this work, anaerobic biodegradability of model aliphatic polyesters, poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA), and poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL), in the form of powder and melt-pressed films with varying molar mass, was studied. Biogas production was explored in batch laboratory trials at 55 ± 1°C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The inoculum used was thermophilic digested sludge (total solids concentration of 2.9%) from operating digesters at the Central Waste Water Treatment Plant in Prague, Czech Republic. Methanogenic biodegradation of PCLs typically yielded from 54 to 60% of the theoretical biogas yield. The biodegradability of PLAs achieved from 56 to 84% of the theoretical value. High biogas yield (up to 677 mL/g TS) with high methane content (more than 60%), comparable with conventionally processed materials, confirmed the potential of polyester samples for anaerobic treatment in the case of their exploitation in agriculture or as a packaging material in the food industry.
V této práci jsme testovali účinnost odstranění mikropolutantů řadou oxidačních (např. ozonizace, UV/H2O2, Fentonova reakce, borem dopovaná diamantová elektroda) a sorpčních (např. granulované aktivní uhlí GAU, zeolity) procesů. Účinnost odstranění vybraných léčiv (např. erythromycin, sulfamethoxazol, ibuprofen atd.) a metabolitů pesticidů (např. acetochlor ESA, metazachlor ESA) jsme testovali v jednorázových vsádkových testech. Abstract (EN) Micropollutants cause harm to aquatic ecosystems and can also negatively affect human health. Major sources of micropollutants input to aquatic environments are wastewater treatment plants due to their insufficient removal during the conventional mechanical-biological process. This study aimed to evaluate potential WWTP effluent post-treatment processes for the removal of selected pharmaceuticals and pesticides using oxidation (e.g., ozonization, UV/H2O2, Fenton, boron-doped diamond electrode) and sorption (e.g. granular activated carbon, zeolite) processes and their combinations. The removal of selected pharmaceuticals (e.g. erythromycin, sulphamethoxazole, ibuprofen) and pesticides (e.g. acetochlor ESA, metazachlor ESA) was tested in batch assays. The combination of UV/H2O2 and activated carbon adsorption was the most favorable in terms of removal efficiency and economic and operational parameters. This combination achieved the removal efficiencies of pharmaceuticals and pesticides of 91 and 100%, respectively, using an optimum H2O2 dose of 5 mg/L and UV intensity of 4 kJ/m2 followed by granular activated carbon adsorption. These promising results are currently adopted in a pilot-scale study for the post-treatment of a real WWTP effluent.
Abstract (en) Intensive use of pesticides has caused serious problems in the ecosystem in many places, especially in terms of the water resources to which pesticides enter. It is not possible to remove pesticides from water using conventional water supply technology, so these substances are found in above-limit concentrations in drinking water. Therefore, it is necessary to design a technology that will be effective in removing them. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in combination with granular activated carbon (GAU) prove to be suitable. The aim of this experiment was to compare the effect of ozonation and advanced oxidation processes, which verified the combination of ozone with UV radiation (O3 + UV) and ozone with hydrogen peroxide (O3 + H2O2) followed by sorption on GAU.
CZ: Přítomnost reziduí plastů v životním prostředí je v poslední době diskutována napříč společností kvůli zamořování oceánů a nedostatečné recyklaci plastových výrobků. EN: Occurrence of plastics in the natural environment is one of the hot topics in the area of environmental studies due to the ocean contamination and insufficient amount of plastics' recycling. Microplastics which cannot be seen by the naked eye are not effectively removed from the water during drinking water treatment and afterwards they enter the human body through the digestive tract. Even though there is no evidence of harmful effects on health, it is assumed that the presence of microplastics in water will be monitored. Our work was aimed on the development of a methodology for the pretreatment of synthetic microfibers based microplastics followed by their subsequent infrared analysis, which can be routine performed in laboratories. Microfibers were subjected to various thermal and oxidative conditions, where hydrogen peroxide was used as an oxidizing agent. Effects of the exposure on changes in chemical structure and colour of fibres were analysed. Optimal exposure conditions for plastic microfibers' pretreatment concerns the exposure in 30% solution of hydrogen peroxide at 60 °C for 8 hours followed by infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). We believe that our results can be utilized for the creating complex methodology of qualitative and quantitative microplastics' evaluation.
