A exposição “Alternativa Zero – tendências polêmicas na arte portuguesa contemporânea” (1977), organizada por Ernesto de Sousa, foi construída nos termos de um projeto amplo e diverso de vanguarda. Ela buscou posicionar a arte contemporânea de Portugal em relação à produção da arte experimental internacional, à nova realidade sociopolítica do fim da ditadura, ao isolamento cultural do país, aos desafios do debate cultural interno e a uma nova postura comprometida dos artistas.
Da adversidade vivemos! – assim finalizou o artista Hélio Oiticica, em tom de alerta e revolta, o manifesto de apresentação da exposição Nova Objetividade Brasileira, realizada no Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro em abril de 1967. A exposição Nova Objetividade Brasileira, mostrada no Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro em 1967, representou um momento fundamental para a debate cultural nacional.
