Features of physical maltreatment given by parents to school children in metropolitan Santiago, ChileAn anonymous self-ad ministered closed-questions survey was applied to 527 parents or tutors of school children in metropolitan Santiago, Chile, lo learn about their opinions and behaviors on child physical punishment: 173 (32.8%) parents came from a county school, 250 (45.5%) from a government subsidized school (both were free of charge and non-confessional) and 104 (19.7%) from a private, user payed, catholic institution. Better educational level and a higher proportion of surveyed males were recorded among parents from the later. Child battering was recognized by 53.7% (private school), 78.0% (county) and 82% (subsidized) school parents even though 34.1% (county) to 51.9% (private] of them declared that battering should never be used, Females admitted child battering more frequently than males at two shools (p<0.01). Poor school performance, defiant attitudes and running away from home were the main reasons alluded to justify battering at both public schools, while defiance was the most frequent claim from private school parents. Females tended to select a hlgner number of reasons, from those offered by the questionary, to justify physical punishment. No striking differences were detected in type of physical punishment, but among private school group belt battering was not admitted.(Keywords: child battering, child abuse, violence, family health.)En 1993 el Parlamento chileno analiz6 diver-y conductas sobre el castigo fisico (CF), en pasas formas de violencia familiar; entre ellas el dres y apoderados (PyA) de tres colegios de maltrato infantil, agresidn ejercida sobre un in-Santiago metropolitano.
