Objective. This study assessed the impact of periodontal diseases on health-related quality of life of adult users of the Brazilian Unified Health System. Study Design. A cross-sectional study was conducted on an outpatient basis. The sample included 151 adults treated in the Periodontics section at Dental Specialty Centres of Juiz de Fora (Minas Gerais, Brazil). The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) measured the impact of periodontal disease on quality of life. Participants were interviewed to obtain self-perception of general and oral health and socioeconomic data, and dental records were consulted to obtain periodontal status data. The values of central tendency of the OHIP-14 were compared with socioeconomic, demographic, and self-reported health predictors using nonparametric tests. The final analysis was performed using multiple linear regressions. Results. The results showed that psychological discomfort and physical disability exhibited a negative impact. The following variables can explain approximately 27% of the impact of oral health conditions on health-related quality of life in this group: periodontal disease, self-perceived oral health, and the need to use or replace dental prosthesis. Conclusion. The need for prosthetic rehabilitation and worse periodontal status are associated with health-related quality of life, which can be predicted by the self-perception of health.
<p><strong>AIMS: </strong>To evaluate influence of variables gender, diagnosis and severity of types of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) on the quality of life of the individual. <strong>METHODS: </strong>The sample consisted of one hundred one individuals seeking TMD treatment at the Faculdade de Odontologia/ Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. The TMD diagnosis was done through the RDC/TMD: Axis I (<em>Research Diagnostic Criteria/Temporomandibular Disorder)</em>. The severity of TMD was established by the Temporomandibular Index (TMI) and the impact on quality of life by the OHIP-14 (<em>Oral Health Impact Profile</em>). The data was tabulated and analyzed by the Mann-Whitney test, T student test and Spearman correlation analysis (α=0,05). <strong>RESULTS: </strong>Most patients had diagnosis of muscular disorder, followed by diagnoses of arthralgia and disk displacement, respectively. All patients had a negative impact on at least one question from OHIP-14.<strong><strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong>: </strong>Women presented worse quality of life when compared to men. The presence of muscular disorder was related to greater impact on quality of life (p<0,05). The relationship between severity of TMD and quality of life in the muscle sub-index of TMI was observed in all domains of OHIP-14 (p<0,05). In addition, there was positive correlation between TMI and the psychological incapacity.</p>
Objective: To evaluate the positive predictive value (PPV) of group B Streptococcus (GBS) cultures at 35-37 weeks of gestation relative to GBS colonization status at delivery. Methods: Rectovaginal swabs from 221 women at labor in four Lisbon hospitals were collected for GBS screening according to the CDC guidelines. Results: The PPV was 24.4%. IAP was administered to 100% of prenatally GBS positive women. There was no case of early onset GBS disease (EOD). Conclusions: Poor accuracy of prenatal cultures in identifying true candidates for IAP highlights the need for Portuguese clinical and laboratory guidelines to prevent EOD and antibiotic overtreatment of pregnant women.
Resumo Introdução Mini-implantes ortodônticos são dispositivos de ancoragem confeccionados à base de titânio, possuindo uma camada de óxido de titânio, que desempenha função importante na resistência à corrosão. Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resistência à corrosão e a microestrutura superficial de mini-implantes novos, utilizados que foram perdidos precocemente e os que obtiveram sucesso de estabilidade, analisando se o processo de corrosão influencia a falha ou a perda de estabilidade, a fim de se comparar com as principais causas de sucesso e insucesso clínico. Material e método A amostra foi composta por 3 grupos de 7 mini-implantes divididos da seguinte maneira: Grupo C: mini-implantes na sua forma original, como são recebidos do fabricante (controle); Grupo PE: mini-implantes utilizados em pacientes e que apresentaram perda de estabilidade precoce em até 2 meses (média de 33,5 dias); Grupo E: mini-implantes utilizados em pacientes com sucesso de estabilidade (média de 230 dias). A análise visual da superfície da rosca dos mini-implantes foi feita através de microscópio eletrônico de varredura e todos foram submetidos a ensaio de polarização cíclica potenciodinâmica em potenciostato. Resultado A microestrutura superficial não foi significativamente alterada pela permanência e perda precoce de estabilidade em seus sítios ósseos. Conclusão Os dados sugeriram que a corrosão não foi fator associado à falha do dispositivo ou perda de sua estabilidade, sendo outros fatores, como o tipo do mini-implante, o seu comprimento e o local de implantação, considerados mais preponderantes com influência no seu insucesso.
Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the corrosion resistance of heat-treated (Reciproc and WaveOne) and non-heat-treated (ProTaper and Mtwo) superelastic nickel-titanium endodontic files when immersed in a 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution. Materials and Methods Anodic polarization curves were obtained with potential sweeps that began at the open circuit potential or corrosion potential (E corr ). The pitting potential (E pit ) was identified on the anodic polarization curve as the potential at which a sudden increase in current was observed. The micromorphology of the 28 tested files was analyzed before and after the electrochemical assay using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance with the post hoc Bonferroni test (for E corr ) and the Student t -test for independent samples (for E pit ). Results The mean E corr values were 0.506 V for ProTaper, 0.348 V for Mtwo, 0.542 V for Reciproc, and 0.321 V for WaveOne files. Only WaveOne and Protaper files exhibited pitting corrosion, with E pit values of 0.879 V and 0.904 V, respectively. On the SEM images of the ProTaper and WaveOne files, cavities suggestive of pitting corrosion were detected. Conclusions Signs of corrosion were observed in both heat-treated and non-heat-treated files. Of the evaluated files, WaveOne (a heat-treated file) and ProTaper (a non-heat-treated file) exhibited the lowest corrosion resistance.

The main ones are: Dental Impact on Daily Living (DIDL), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL), Oral Health Impact Profile-short version (OHIP-14), United Kingdom Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHQoL-UK), Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP), EuroQoL (EQ), and other indices. World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) After noting the lack of a quality of life assessment instrument with a cross-cultural focus, the WHO developed a unique methodology for its creation. Initially, the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-100) was developed, an instrument composed of 100 questions. The need for a quicker instrument for use in extensive epidemiological studies led the WHO to develop a shortened version with 26 questions (the WHOQOL-BREF).
