An ion mobility mass spectrometer has been modified to allow optical interrogation of ions with different mass-to-charge (m/z) ratios and/or mobilities (K). An ion gating and trapping procedure has been developed which allows us to store ions for several seconds enabling UV photodissociation (UVPD).
SmartFrog is a framework for creating configuration-driven systems. It has been designed with the express purpose of making the design, deployment and management of distributed component-based systems simpler and more robust. Over the last decade it has been the focus for ongoing research into aspects of configuration management and large-scale distributed systems, providing a platform for experimentation. The paper covers the rationale for the design of the framework, details of its design, plus a description of the further research that is in progress.

Hysteresis in the field emission (FE) data of a chemical vapor synthesized carbon nanotube fiber cathode is analyzed in the regime where self-heating effects are negligible. In both the forward and reverse applied field sweeps, various FE modes of operation are identified: including Fowler-Nordheim (FN) tunneling and space-charge limited emission from the fiber tip and FN emission from the fiber sidewall. Hysteresis in the FE data is linked to the difference in the field enhancement factors in the different FE modes of operation in the forward and reverse sweeps and related to changes in the fiber morphology.
