Para MASER (1975), etimológicamente, a palavra "comunicar" deriva do latim., significando "por em comum, partilhar, trocar opiniões, conferenciar". É um vocábulo que se tornou popular através dos tempos sendo atualmente empregado para denominar a relação entre as pessoas, falando em sentido geral.O processo global da comunicação é dotado de sentido amplo, envolvendo meios verbais c não verbais pelos quais uma pessoa pode influenciar a outra. WEAVER (1980) destaca alguns meios que o homem utiliza para transmitir idéias: a palavra falada, diretamente ou por telefone ou rádio; a palavra escrita ou impressa, emitida pela mão ou equipamento; acenos de cabeça, de mão;
Durante o outono europeu de 1965, o Professor Lucien Lison visitou a Universidade de Bruxelas a fim de recrutar docentes para a nova faculdade que ele havia criado no ano anterior em Ribeirão Preto. O vestibular fora feito no início de 1964 e a primeira turma já terminara o ano propedêutico. Este último fora concebido como um ciclo comum para os três cursos (Biologia, Química e Psicologia) e consistia principalmente na iniciação do aluno no método científico e na demonstração experimental. Já que a finalidade do propedêutico não exigia conhecimentos específicos, foi relativamente fácil achar docentes nas faculdades já existentes ou nas outras instituições que se encontravam em Ribeirão Preto na época. Mas, para os anos ulteriores, era necessário contar com docentes para matérias especializadas e o Prof. Lison pensou encontrá-los nas universidades belgas. Ele deixou um aviso no mural da secretaria do Departamento de Psicologia na Universidade de Bruxelas anunciando que uma nova faculdade no Brasil procurava docentes para diversas matérias de um curso de Psicologia.Na mesma época, apareceram sinais de recessão econômica na Bélgica e o Governo Belga fez cortes substanciais no orçamento das universidades e no financiamento das pesquisas. Este fato criou um sentimento de insegurança e, sendo um jovem docente na época, inspirei-me a apresentar minha candidatura. No inicio do ano de 1966, recebi um contrato, assinado pelo diretor da faculdade, que entraria em vigor após exame médico efetuado no Brasil. Comecei a completar as formalidades e fazer os preparativos para a viagem. Passagens para mim e para minha esposa já tinham sido reservadas para o navio Julius Cesar, que deveria deixar o porto de Gênova no dia 8 de maio. Nos primeiros dias de abril, apresentei meu aviso prévio na universidade, mas alguns dias depois, recebi um telegrama no qual o professor Lison me informava que o Governador do Estado, Ademar de Barros, fora cassado e, segundo as leis vigentes, toda nomeação para funções Públicas estava suspensa durante 160 dias. Minha esposa conseguiu anular seu aviso prévio na Faculdade da Medicina, mas eu já tinha sido substituído no Departamento de Psicologia. Pouco tempo depois, consegui obter um contrato com o Departamento de Pesquisas Sociais das Forças Armadas Belgas, onde executei pesquisas junto com um psicólogo militar a respeito do problemas psicológicos que podem surgir durante o comando de pequenos grupos militares. Este colega, Jacques-Philippe Leyens (atualmente professor titular de Psicologia Social da Université Catholique de Louvain), falou-me de um amigo dele de Louvain que também se preparara para emigrar ao Brasil a fim de lecionar numa faculdade estadual e que se encontrava numa situação semelhante à minha.
