et de plus en plus vivement, souhaité. L'intérêt de l'ouvrage n'est pas à démontrer aux lecteurs de cette revue ; rappelons seulement que le recueil qui jusqu'à présent en tient lieu, Les monuments de la France classés chronologiquement et considérés sous le rapport des faits historiques et de l'étude des arts, d'Alexandre de Laborde, date de 1816. Pour les monuments antiques, en tout cas, l'entreprise ne soufïre pas d'être différée davantage, non seulement parce que les vestiges de ceux qui subsistent s'amenuisent chaque jour en dépit de l'entretien dont ils font l'objet mais encore parce que le souvenir de ceux qui ont récemment disparu risque d'être, si l'on n'y prend garde, définitivement perdu. Les documents relatifs à ces derniers, en effet, demeurent le plus souvent dispersés, donc périssables : il n'est pas moins pressant de les rechercher que de procéder au relevé des restes encore visibles. La publication de gravures du siècle dernier représentant des antiques d'Autun nous offre l'occasion de vérifier, une fois de plus, et de souligner cette double urgence. Les dessins à partir desquels ces gravures furent exécutées sont l'oeuvre d'un archéologue local, Jean Roidot-Deléage. Né en 1794 près d'Autun, au hameau des Guyards (commune de Tavernay), Jean Roidot, ainsi qu'il est plus couramment dénommé, appartint d'abord, de 1820 à 1832 ou 1833, au corps des Ponts et Chaussées ; puis il remplit, de 1859 à 1866, et un an environ en 1876, les fonctions d'architecte-voyer de la ville d'Autun, dont il fut trente-trois ans conseiller municipal. Passionné de botanique et d'entomologie-on lui doit un catalogue des plantes de son pays, inséré dans la Flore du Centre de la France de Boreau (1840)-, il s'intéressa aussi très vite, à la faveur des longs et fréquents déplacements auxquels l'obligèrent ses premières occupations professionnelles, au réseau des voies romaines de l'Autunois et du Morvan ; il en reconstitua la carie, qui parut en 1856 dans une publication de la Société Eduenne et que vinrent compléter les nouveaux éléments découverts et communiqués par lui à la Commission de Topographie de la Gaule romaine. De cette étude dériva tout naturellement celle qu'il consacra, lorsqu'il devint architecte-voyer, aux voies d' Augustodunum, point de départ ou d'arrivée des routes dont il avait restitué le tracé ; à l'aide d'une multitude de tronçons épars, minutieusement constatés, il dressa un plan de la cité antique, publié en 1872 par la Société éduenne, après avoir valu à son auteur, en 1869, une médaille de la Société française de numismatique et d'archéologie. Parallèlement à ce travail d'ensemble, Jean Roidot releva isolément les plans et détails des monuments romains d'Autun, dont il laissa à sa mort, en 1878, un album, selon J.-G. Bulliot1, « aussi complet que possible ». I. ANALYSE ET DESCRIPTION par Paul-Marie DUVAL et Venceslas KRUTA 1897 : année faste pour l'archéologie gauloise et, plus largement, pour l'histoire culturelle des Celtes : en Bourgogne, cinq années d'un calendrier en langue gauloise, gravé sur bronze à l'époque gallo-romaine, ressortent du sol à Goligny (Ain) ; l'impression et la publication détaillée se terminent en 19861;-en Champagne, une tombe laténienne livre le plus somptueusement décoré des fourreaux celtiques connus : voici la publication exhaustive de cet objet remarquable. Les deux signataires du présent mémoire se sont partagé la tâche : la première partie que l'on va lire, essentiellement descriptive, est issue d'une étude de l'objet original, lentement effectuée en commun; la seconde, largement comparative, est l'oeuvre de Venceslas Kruta. Description : elle restait à faire-état avant la restauration, à l'aide d'un dossier photographique,-état actuel, avec reprise complète de la prise de vues et réalisation de fac-similés, ensemble et détails entièrement inédits. L'intérêt d'établir un document strictement exact n'avait d'égal que la difficulté de l'effectuer : l'observation à la loupe binoculaire, utilisée pour la première fois pour cet objet, a été l'exercice majeur, maintes fois répété avec le concours de plusieurs experts* ; exécution des dessins avec des expressions graphiques diverses, étudiées pour distinguer les moyens utilisés par le graveur pour varier les traits et les fonds de façon à tirer le plus grand nombre d'effets possibles du jeu de la lumière. Est-il besoin de souligner que plus d'un détail jusqu'ici inaperçu a été révélé grâce à cette méthode d'analyse et d'illustration, cette dernière étant toujours préparée en commun, archéologues et dessinateurs réunis? On appréciera que les images ont été multipliées et diversifiées autant que le méritait cet objet de haute qualité et de première importance. P.-M. D.
