ABSTRACTLady palm (Rhapis excelsa) has high commercial value, specially in ornaments of vases and gardens located on shade. However, the information about its requirements in fertilizer and great terms of shading are little. To shade, the common used material is shade net black. The color shade net stimulate the vegetal growth and it is recently used in the commercial system. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of different percents and types of shades and foliar fertilizer in development of seedlings this palm. The plants used in this experiment were cultivated in recipients with soil, organic matter and sand (1:1:1), with the addition of 10 g of fertilizer by liter of substrate. These plants were four years old approximately. The measurements of increasing of height and number of leaves were taken at 105 and 195 days since the beginning of the experiment. It was also observed the number and height of seedlings, width from leaflets, as well as the final plant height at 195 days. The foliar fertilizer was not affected in growth of seedlings. The different types of screening either affect significantly the final height of the plants, indicating than the growth of palm Rhapis can be under any kind of shade.
Studying the origins and transformations of a public square throughout time is extremely important, since it motivates its preservation and the consecration of its history. Therefore, the objective of this study was to carry out historic-cultural and landscape analyses of Dr. José Esteves Square and its whereabouts, built near a train station located in Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This research focused on the period between 1721 (settlement) and 2014. Dr. José Esteves Square was created to ornate and supports the arrival of passengers at the train station of Lavras. The way this public square was built is somewhat different from most public squares in Brazil, which are normally constructed around a church. Lack of maintenance, due to privatization, and the abandonment of train station facilities, made the gardens and areas around Dr. José Esteves Square lose their importance and the aesthetic characteristics they once had. Keywords: historical gardens, landscaping, Minas Gerais, railroads, Estrada Real (Royal Road).
Travel and Tourism have been considered one of the world's largest economic sectors, and garden visiting has been suggested as an important segment (niche) on the tourism industry. In this context, the aim is to analyze gardens as a great potential for tourism, in their different specificity. For tourism, all kinds of greenspaces may be used as historic, botanical or private gardens, and parks, besides events as garden and flower festival and exhibitions. All of them are responsible for attracting many visitors. This type of tourism has been increasing since tourists are eager for new and unique experiences that contribute to the memory and the identity of a nation and gardens may allow this to happen.
Calla lily is an appreciated specie used for flower arrangements. In spite of its commercial importance, there is little information on calla lily postharvest conservation. Thus, this study aimed to determine the best sucrose concentration for pulsing and cold storage conditions to extend calla lily postharvest durability. Flower stalks were submitted to a pulsing pre-treatment using 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16% sucrose in the solution, for one hour, plus a treatment with direct storage in cold chamber (4 o C), without a prior-treatment. Dry storage or storage in solution with the commercial product Flower ® was also tested. A completely randomized design was used with four replicates and three inflorescences per plot. Spathe length and width were daily measured from which the opening and wilting processes were analyzed. It was observed that pulsing with sucrose was efficient in extending calla lily inflorescences opening process and durability. Dry storage for short periods (less than six days) can also be used, but a prior-treatment with 12% sucrose pulsing for one hour or with a water supply for the same period was required. For storage in solution, a pulsing with 5% or 7.5% sucrose was recommended.Index terms: Zantedeschia aethiopica, durability, floriculture.
ABSTRACT Developmental stage and pulsing in inflorescences of torch gingerTropical species are very important in the flower market, but information in harvest and postharvest procedures are not enough. There is not enough information on pulsing or holding solutions for most tropical species. The objective was to evaluate the durability and quality of postharvest torch ginger flower stems (Etlingera elatior) at sucrose concentrations in pulsing solution and different flower opening stages. Flower stems were harvested early morning at three flower opening stages: inflorescences with 1/3, 2/3 and completely open bracts, withal the stalks were pulsed with sucrose solution at concentrations of 0 (control), 10, 20, and 30% for 24h. Experimental design was completely randomized in a 4x3x6 factorial with 3 replications in a split plot in time. Evaluations were performed every 3 days, determining the fresh weight of flowers and assessing inflorescence quality through scores on a 0-4 point scale. Commercial vase life of stalks is longer (10 days) when inflorescences are harvested with 1/3 bracts opened. It is recommended to carry out pulsing in torch ginger flower stems with concentration of 20% sucrose for 24h for inflorescences harvested with 1/3 or 2/3 of the bracts opened.
The importance of segment of flowers and ornamental plants in agribusiness are growing. Researches that analyze the situation of different sector of this segment may contribute to establishing politics and actions to stimulate its development. In order to attend this purpose, the aim of this research was to analyze segments of the flower and ornamental plant production chain, focusing on producers and retailers. For that, two different surveys were applied, composed of direct and indirect questions. The application was performed online, using social media or in person, in the company location or in trend fairs. It was observed that the flower and ornamental plant production is mainly a familiar business. Another important issue is that the springtime consists of a new date for flower and ornamental plant commercialization. The number of retailers has been increasing, and this segment had some improvements as sales of different products and services. The flower and ornamental plant commercialization are still, in the majority, in physical location shops, besides of all the technologies available for online sales.
