ResumoA análise dos produtos de degradação oxidativa da Hb S foi avaliada a partir da q u a n t i f i c a ç ã o d a m e t a e m o g l o b i n a e contagem de eritrócitos com corpos de Heinz. Os radicais livres originados a partir do oxigênio provocam extensas lesões aos eritrócitos, diminuindo seu período de vida útil especialmente aos portadores de Hb S. O í o n s u p e r ó x i d o ( O 2• ) é o g r a n d e responsável pelo processo de oxidação da h e m o g l o b i n a , l e v a n d o à f o r m a ç ã o d e metaemoglobina e posteriormente formação de hemicromos que se ligam à membrana e evoluem para a forma de corpos de Heinz, destruindo a membrana e provocando hemólise do eritrócito. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho mostraram que o genótipo SS é o mais susceptível ao ataque dos radicais livres e o genótipo S/Tal. Beta possui susceptibilidade oxidativa inferior ao SS por possuir apenas um β S mutado. Os resultados nos permitiram concluir que: a) a simples presença de Hb S, independente do seu genótipo e da sua concentração, é suficiente para produzir a metaemoglobinização desta hemoglobina; b) não há uma relação direta entre concentração de metaemoglobina e p r e s e n ç a d e c
