The State of Maranhão comprises the second largest coastline in Brazil. Nonetheless, few floristic surveys on restinga vegetation have been performed in Northeastern Brazil. This study aimed to survey floristic in a restinga of Maranhão, and to assess its similarity to other restingas in the states of Pará and Piauí. Botanical specimens were sampled at Sítio Aguahy, in the municipality of São José de Ribamar, along the eastern coast of Maranhão between June/2012 and October/2013. Species identification and life forms classification followed the usual methods employed in floristic studies. Similarities in plant composition of six sites were estimated based on cluster analysis through Bray-Curtis distance. In the studied area, we found 116 phanerogamic species, 100 genera and 52 families; 19 species were new occurrences for the restinga of Maranhão. Families with largest number of species were Fabaceae, Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae, Poaceae, Myrtaceae, Asteraceae, Malvaceae, Combretaceae, and Eriocaulaceae, which comprised 49.2% of all sampled species. We identified 41 nanophanerophytes, 34 terophytes, 15 camephytes, ten microphanerophytes, six hemicryptophytes, and five lianas. Similarity analyses indicated greater affinity between the restinga flora from the states of Maranhão and Pará than that observed for the states of Maranhão and Piauí, suggesting that the process of species colonization in the former is more likely derived from the Amazon Forest. It is expected that these results may encourage future researchers to conduct further surveys in restinga areas of the Maranhão aiming to better understand the influence of neighboring vegetation on the colonization of the coastal areas of Maranhão. A total of 477 species distributed among 303 genera and 95 families were encountered. The families with the greatest numbers of species were Poaceae (39 species), Fabaceae (34), Cyperaceae (26), Euphorbiaceae (25), Myrtaceae (24), Rubiaceae (20), Caesalpiniaceae (17), Mimosaceae (16), Asteraceae (14), Orchidaceae (14), Bromeliaceae (9), Boraginaceae (8), Malvaceae (8), Solanaceae (8), and Annonaceae, Araceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Malpighiaceae, and Melastomataceae (7 each). Approximately 60 % of the species were common to other restinga areas in northeastern Brazil, and 39.3 % were restricted to the coast of Pernambuco.
Sandy coastal plain vegetation (Restinga) is composed of communities of plants that grow on Quaternary Neosols along the entire extension of the Brazilian coast. The state of Piauí has a coastal extension of 66 km and is entirely located in the semi-arid zone of Northeastern Brazil. This study catalogued the phanerogam species found along the coast of the state of Piauí, the data of which was compiled from surveys in online databases and literature, and herbarium collections. A total of 363 species distributed among 235 genera, and 74 families were identified. The families with the greatest number of species included Fabaceae (108 species), Euphorbiaceae (19), Amaranthaceae (13), Apocynaceae (12), Cyperaceae (12), Rubiaceae (12), Bignoniaceae (11), Malvaceae (11) and Poaceae (11) and represent over 57.6% of the species collected. Approximately 87% of the species were common to other restinga areas in Northeastern Brazil, and ca. 13% were restricted to the coast of the state of Piauí.
of fruits, seeds and seedlings Guettarda platypoda DC. (Rubiaceae). Biota Neotrop. 10(1): http://www.biotaneotropica.org.br/v10n1/en/ abstract?article+bn02310012010.Abstract: Morphology of fruits, seeds and seedlings Guettarda platypoda DC. (Rubiaceae). Guettarda platypoda DC., popularly known as angélica, is a shrub of medicinal importance and it has Neotropical distribution. The aim of this work is to characterize morphologically its seeds, fruits and seedlings, adding data to support studies about its utilization and conservation of this specie. Ripe fruits were manually collected from ten matrix trees in the restinga of Maracaípe, stored in identified paper bags, and cooled until processing them in the laboratory. Fresh material was used for morphological analysis of fruits, seeds and seedlings. Fruits of G. platypoda are drups, with only one bilocular pireny, hypocotyl embryo and vestigial cotyledons. Seeds were treated to break dormancy, but even so seedling emergency was slow. Germination is epigeous and the cotyledons are foliaceous. The characteristics of fruits, seeds and seedlings of G. platypoda here described are useful for identification, as well as, to increase knowledge on the its biology. Resumo: Morfologia de frutos, sementes e plântulas de Guettarda platypoda DC. (Rubiaceae). AbstractMorphological description of Manilkara salzmannii (Sapotaceae) fruits and seeds. Manilkara gender has a considerable economic value, because of the edible fruits, the quality of its wood, the latex and the fact that it can be used for popular medicine and ornamentation. In Brazil, the gender is represented by approximately 19 species that are mainly distributed through the Atlantic Forest and coastal vegetation. The present study aimed to characterize the biometric aspects of Manilkara salzmannii seeds and fruits in order to contribute to the biology and behavior of the species, and to give important subsidies for its identification. The mature fruits were collected manually or with the help of a pruning shears, stored in paper bags, identified and cooled until processing. A total of 100 fruits and 100 seeds were randomly selected for the morphological analysis. The seeds were manually extracted from the fruits, washed in running water and weighted, in order to determine the number of seeds per kilogram and the weight of a thousand seeds. The fruits and the seeds were analyzed with the aim of contributing as a tool for the differentiation of the species and helping in the determination of the species variability in dispersion studies and dispersion agents. It is also important for the analysis of succession and regeneration of forest ecosystems.
