Práticas Educativas e Problemas de Comportamento Práticas Educativas Maternas e Problemas deComportamento em Pré-Escolares Childrearing Practices and Behavior Problems in Preschool Children AbstractThe aim of the present study was to investigate differences in mothers' childrearing practices toward children with and without behavior problems involving externalizing behaviors (clinical and non-clinical group, respectively). Thirty mother-child dyads from both low and medium-low SES level participated in the study. Children were of both sexes, with ages ranging from five to six years. The dyads were assigned to the clinical or non-clinical group based on the children's scores on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The mothers were interviewed about their childrearing practices in both structured and spontaneous situations. Content analysis of the interviews regarding the structured situations revealed that the mothers of the clinical group mentioned significantly more coercive practices than did mothers of the non-clinical group. The same trend appeared in the spontaneous situations, although the differences were not significant.
Palavras-chave: práticas educativas maternas; doença crônica infantil; infância AbstractThe physical chronic disease in childhood and the mother's childrearing practices. . Studies indicate that the presence of physical chronic disease in childhood may constitute an important factor to the quality of mother-child interaction. However, few studies investigate the childrearing practices in children with physical chronic disease. The daily care demand by the disease treatment as well as the child physical and emotional fragility may affect the childrearing practices. Fourty mothers participated in this study, half of them with a child with physical chronic disease and the other with a child without this condition. The children were of both sexes, 3 to 4 years old. The participants were selected in public hospitals and schools. A semi-structured interview was used to investigate the mother's childrearing practices, examined by content analysis. The results show a marginally significant difference showing that the group of mothers of the chronic disease children uses coercive practices less frequently. Moreover, there was a significant difference between the groups in relation to the use of physical punishment and privation/penalty, suggesting that mothers of chronic disease children use less frequently this type of practice. The results support the initial hypothesis that mot...
Stressful events can affect the mental health of women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This study investigated the relationship between sociodemographic variables, stressors during pregnancy and women's mental health during pregnancy and postpartum. Seventy-nine pregnant women responded to the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and, in the first month of the baby's life, to the Stressful Life Events Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-I). Regression analysis revealed that: (a) the score of common mental disorders in pregnancy was the only significant predictor of postpartum depression; (b) when the effects of postpartum depression on the perception of stressful life events were controlled, the impact of stressful life events on the variance in common mental disorders during pregnancy disappeared, and only the income remained as a significant predictor. These findings indicate the stability of the symptoms of mental disorders from pregnancy to the postpartum period.
