La contribution propose une analyse des attendus en grammaire en fin d’école primaire à travers les programmes et les circulaires parus entre 1923 et 2018. Elle prend appui sur les textes officiels français parus sur près de cent ans, et va même au-delà pour intégrer la parution récente de la nouvelle terminologie grammaticale du 15 juillet 2020. L’objectif de l’étude est de repérer l’évolution des finalités annoncées ainsi que le contenu des nomenclatures grammaticales à enseigner aux élèves. L’analyse se focalise sur les deux derniers programmes officiels (2015 et 2018), séparés de seulement trois années, parce qu’ils illustrent les tensions vives qui traversent la question de l’enseignement de la langue à l’école élémentaire. L’évolution de ces prescriptions ne ressemble pas, de fait, à un long fleuve tranquille… Les changements permanents sont en effet préjudiciables à la qualité et à l’efficacité de cet enseignement. Et les prescriptions ne doivent pas faire oublier que ce sont les pratiques réelles qui sont au cœur des réflexions. De fait, comprendre ce qui s’enseigne reste le chantier à explorer pour mettre en phase prescriptions institutionnelles, recherches en didactique de la grammaire et pratiques pédagogiques.
