O presente trabalho apresenta um relato histórico sobre a astrofísica britânico-estadunidense Cecilia Payne (1900–1979), cuja trajetória pessoal esteve envolta em dificuldades enfrentadas enquanto mulher na busca por reconhecimento e ascensão acadêmica. Exibe, também, sua importância fundamental na determinação da abundância relativa dos elementos químicos nas estrelas durante sua pesquisa de doutorado, na década de 1920. Para tal, tomamos por base tanto publicações da época, realizadas pela própria cientista e também por seus pares, quanto fontes posteriores que tratam de sua história de vida e carreira profissional. Entendemos que a tese de doutorado de Payne representa um marco na Astrofísica, por apontar a alta concentração de hidrogênio e hélio na composição das atmosferas estelares em relação aos demais elementos analisados, achado que contrariava a concepção vigente, na qual elementos metálicos, como o ferro, teriam maior preponderância. Mesmo diante de tal feito, atualmente visto como pioneiro, Cecilia Payne permaneceu subvalorizada profissionalmente por ser mulher.
