Parole chiave: Eumolpo; Eleusi; A tene; Megara; Tracia; sinecismo. The study proposes an examen of the genealogies related to the mythical figure of Eumolpus, in the light of the gap between the local Eleusinian tradition, linked to a remote megarian past and the archaic and classic propaganda of Athens, which transforms the hero into the main (barbarian) character of the wars of Eleusis. The projects aims to demonstrate the continuity between the Eleusinian Eumolpus, progenitor of the ierophantic family, and the homonymic Thracian warrior who opposes to Athens.Key words: Eumolpus; Eleusis; Athens; Megara; Thrace; synoecism. La maggior parte degli editori, però, conserva il testo così com'è e concorda sul fatto che il passo alluda non alle guerre eleusine ma al rituale della βαλλητύς (Mylonas 1961, pp. 139-140; Richardson 1974, p. 246; Cassola 1975, p. 478; Foley 1994, p. 52; Sonnino 2010, p. 50).5 Accolta invece nella ceramica contemporanea (Richardson 1974, p. 195; Raubitschek 1982; Shapiro 1989, pp. 76-77 e 81-83;Harrison 2000). Sulla connessione tra Eleusi e la cerealicoltura, si vedano S., TrGF IV 596-617a F; Marmor Parium, FGrHist 239 A 12-13; Ou., Fast. IV 507-508; Paus. I 14.2; [Apollod]., I 5; Brelich 1978, pp. 112-113. IV 68 e XI 193; Lycurg, Leocr. 98; Demar., FGrHist 42 F 4; Str. VIII 7.1; Luc., Anach. 34), o solo gli eleusini (Th. II 15.1; Paus.

This article aims to show that genealogies and foundations were a crucial tool in Late Antiquity in order to build the identity of a people. They were also used to develop political strategies and propaganda in order to support an emperor or to damage his memory. As to display how these strategies worked, we will consider a case-study offered by the historian Candidus : he is the author of a History of the Empire, containing an Archaeology of the Isaurians, that helped to forge the identity of this people. This study will show how this Archaeology lead to the construction of an ethnic consciousness, but it was later overthrown by Late ancient and Byzantine sources (as Procopius of Gaza, the Logothetenchronik, etc.), as to promote a negative image of the emperor Zeno and the Amorian dynasty. It follows that the rediscovery and the manipulation of the mythical past played a prominent role on the political scene during Late Antiquity and Byzantine era.
