Récit assez bref que l'éditeur qualifie de roman, Un bus pour Tokyo 1 de Jean-Sébastien Huot fait assurément preuve de beaucoup d'inventivité. Un homme laisse tout tomber, se retrouve à la gare d'autocars de Montréal, sans que l'on sache exactement pourquoi, puis achète un billet pour San Francisco, un voyage prévu de soixante-douze heures. L'objectif du narrateur est de se joindre au San Francisco Crazy Boy Karate Club. Motivé par l'idée du combat et influencé par la console de jeu Game Boy, c'est en réalité à la suite de la lecture d'un extrait d'un « livre dont vous êtes le héros », Le combattant de l'autoroute, feuilleté à la tabagie de la gare, qu'il décide de partir. Après un premier trajet vers le sud (New York), le voyageur effectue une traversée des États-Unis, d'est en ouest. Comme il ne respecte pas toujours les horaires et qu'il s'arrête plus longtemps que prévu dans certaines villes, il connaît des aventures intrigantes, bizarres. Il donne l'impression d'avoir la maturité d'un jeune homme de vingt ans, mais les événements de son passé laissent croire qu'il est plus âgé. Les dates ne sont pas précisées. Sommes-nous en 1993, en 2003, en 2013 ? Le voyage sera, somme toute, peu concluant : sans véritable surprise, on comprend que la traversée elle-même compte plus que la destination finale. Si le périple est présenté de manière chronologique, le récit procède à un vaet-vient constant entre le présent et le passé. On n'apprend jamais le nom du protagoniste, mais il révèle au lecteur son enfance et son adolescence, notamment ses voyages hebdomadaires en autocar avec sa soeur entre Québec (chez son père) et Montréal (chez sa mère). Presque tout devient un prétexte pour raconter son passé : moments marquants, événements joyeux ou traumatisants, voyages, tous bien ancrés dans le réel. Au contraire, la vraisemblance disparaît un peu plus à chaque étape du voyage, et le présent perd ainsi petit à petit ses liens avec la réalité. L'avant-dernière étape du parcours, de Salt Lake City (Utah) à Reno (Nevada), ne se déroule plus en autocar, mais bien sur un nouveau type de tapis volant, plus particulièrement un carré de trottoir en ciment sur lequel le protagoniste navigue dans les airs.
