Here we demonstrate that fixed DUWLs and handpieces can be contaminated by viral agents and become a vehicle of cross-infection and that a specific online active decontamination system developed for both handpieces and fixed waterlines can eliminate this risk.

Glucocorticoids are drugs noted for their potent anti-inflammatory effect and long lasting half-life. Various studies have been carried out to identify which of these molecules is best for reducing the postoperative sequelae after surgical extraction of the impacted lower third molar. This study examines four different ways of administering dexamethasone after surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars: endoalveolar application, submucous injection, intravenous administration and intramuscular injection, with the aim of identifying which method gives the least discomfort to the patient in regard to reduction of pain, edema and post-operative lock-jaw. Results show that a greater reduction of the postoperative sequelae was obtained in the group of patients treated with dexamethasone intravenously. Satisfying results were also obtained in the group treated with a topical administration of dexamethasone in powder form and in the group which was given dexamethasone through an intramuscular injection. These last two groups had similar results. Instead, the results obtained in the group that received dexamethasone through local submucous injection were not satisfactory.Excision of the third lower molar under local anesthetic is one of the most frequently performed interventions in oral surgery. This intervention is usually associated with post-operative pain, edema and trismus, as direct consequences immediately after surgery, influencing the quality of life of the patient. Various studies have therefore been carried out on the control ofthis post-operative reaction and various perioperative strategies have been proposed aimed at preventing the onset of inflammation which is the cause of pain. The introduction of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) has greatly modified the way in which post-operative pain is dealt with in dentistry and medicine in general in However, the prescription of NSAIDs, in particular aspirin, is often cause for concern as these drugs cause the inhibitionof the platelet aggregation with a possible increase of intra-and post-operative bleeding and the formationof post-operativehematomas and ecchymosis. Maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation aims to restore anatomic function when serious tissue defects are present, as a result of congenital factors, trauma, or surgery. The aims are both aesthetic and functional, and results are obtained using devices that contain, reconstruct, and fill. This study introduces a technique using methods and materials that are acceptable to the patient in that they satisfy chewing, phonetic, and aesthetic functions, while respecting bone structure and restoring function to the soft tissues without causing trauma to them. Our techniques do not use innovative materials, but ones that are structurally different and that, until now, have not been connected with attachment systems. Acrylic resin, acetylic resin, and silicon are used, each in such a way as to take maximum advantage of each material's characteristics and thus give the best results.

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of adding platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to a new highly purified bovine allograft (Laddec ® ) in the bone regeneration of cystic bony defects augmented following cystectomy. Material and Methods: Study sample included 20 patients undergoing cystectomy in which the bone defect was filled with PRP and Laddec ® . All patients were examined with periapical radiographs before operation and at follow-up. After 3 months, at re-entry surgery for implant placement, bone core was taken for histological and histomorphometric analysis. Results: The postoperative successive radiographs showed a good regeneration of bone in the height of bony defects with application of PRP to bone graft. By the first postoperative month, about 48% of the defect was filled, which gradually increased in each month and showed about 90% of defect-fill by 6 months. Histological and histomorphometric analysis, showed a significant presence of bone tissue and vessels, with newly formed bone in contact with anorganic bone particles. The mean volume of vital bone was 68 ± 1.6% and the mean percentage of vital bone was 48 ± 2.4%. The mean percentage of inorganic particles in tissues was 20 ± 1.2% of the total volume. All the samples analyzed did not evidence the presence of inflammatory cells. Conclusions:The results of this study showed how the use of Laddec ® in association with platelet-rich plasma allows bone regeneration and has a potential for routine clinical use for regeneration of cystic bony defects.
