School counselors typically receive little or no supervision of their counseling. This article provides a review of school counseling as a specialty area of the counseling profession, including attention to historical development, training standards and accreditation, certification, and future trends and issues.
This phenomenological study explored the experiences of rural school counselors as social justice advocates. The first author interviewed seven participants in their respective communities and identified five themes, including both positive and negative elements: the stability of place, community promise, mutual reliance, professional and personal integration, and a focus on individuals. The authors include implications for practice and future research on the ways that rural school counselors can use community resources to advocate for marginalized groups of students.
High dropout rates and poor academic performance are too often characteristic of the educational experience for African American male adolescents. In response to this dilemma, enrichment initiatives targeting young Black men have been developed. This article provides an in-depth description of Project: Gentlemen on the Move, a program designed to develop and nurture academic and social excellence in African American male adolescents. Recommendations for school counselors are provided.
