O presente artigo propõe-se, por meio de procedimento de pesquisa denominado autoetnográfico, realizar uma reflexão acerca do analfabetismo a partir de um olhar mais atento à Dona Alzira, pessoa de muitas linguagens e que, sob o rótulo de analfabeta, é pensada socialmente a partir daquilo que lhe falta. Relega-se à periferia, assim, sua cultura e seus saberes próprios. Aliada a estas discussões, faz-se uma relação entre a aprendizagem da leitura e da escrita como divisor de águas entre aqueles socialmente valorizados enquanto cultos, trazendo à emergência tal discussão a partir da narrativa da história de alfabetização de uma das autoras. Busca aporte teórico em autores como Levinas, Nunes e Freire, teóricos que contribuem para a ampliação das discussões apresentadas no sentido de avançar no entendimento dos sentidos do analfabetismo e da alfabetização a partir da valorização do outro a partir de sua própria história, transpondo os rótulos sociais que caracterizam sujeitos analfabetos como inferiores. O artigo apresenta um importante desafio: olhar os sujeitos humanos a partir de suas próprias palavras. Escutá-los enquanto sujeitos de história, de cultura, para muito além do analfabetismo. Isso porque, o outro é rosto, pura linguagem e indizível, quando olhado em sua característica de infinito. Ele está em lugar de privilégio em relação a mim; vem antes e, justamente por isso, é meu mestre. É o próprio outro quem me ensina a olhá-lo.
