Microaggregates that characterize ferralic soils have been hypothesized to have physical, geochemical and/or biological origins. Despite of many studies, the hierarchy between these processes that form microaggregates has seldom been reported. The objective of this work was to study the genesis of microaggregates in a sequence of Ferralic Nitisols developed on Quaternary red clayey sediments and diabase in Piracicaba (SP), Brazil. This issue was tackled by combining optical microscopy, image analysis, scanning electron microscopy and elemental iron quantifications by X-ray fluorescence. Micromorphological investigations showed three different types of microaggregates: (i) oval microaggregates with well sorted quartz grains in their interior; (ii) oval microaggregates without or with poorly sorted quartz grains in their interior; and (iii) dense polyedric microaggregates. These morphological evidences, together with the elemental iron determinations and scanning electron microscopy, revealed the contribution of more than one process for microaggregate formation: (i) the mechanical action of the mesofauna would form the first type of microaggregates (ii) geochemical and biological processes would form the second type and (iii) the fissuration of the soil matrix by expansion and compression processes would form the third type.
Imazaqnin is a herbicide used intensively in Brazil to control a large number of weeds associated with soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Most of the Brazilian soils are highly weathered (50–60% are Oxisols). The extent of sorption and desorption of imazaquin in these soils will dictate its mobility and environmental fate once microbial degradation is negligible. Sorption and desorption of imazaquin were studied in nine samples (seven surface and two subsurface) from highly weathered soils and in two other soils. Sorption of imazaquin was low in all soils, except in the soil with high organic carbon content (OC) content and low soil‐solution pH (Typic Humaquept, GH soil). The OC and the soil‐solution pH were the soil attributes that correlated better with the amount of sorbed imazaquin in the studied highly weathered soils [r = 0.91 (significant at the 0.01 probability level) and −0.62 (significant at the 0.05 probability level), respectively]. The Fe oxide content was an important soil attribute affecting sorption of imazaquin when OC was low. In general, a model based on hydrophobic interactions was capable of predicting sorption of imazaquin. However, this model and others based on multivariate regression were not capable of predicting sorption of imazaquin on highly weathered soils with pH‐dependent charges and low OC, such as the subsurface acric soils. Low sorption implies a high potential for mobility and, therefore, imazaquin may reach important sources of drinking water. This potential for mobility may be diminished in highly weathered soils due to their acidic nature and high Fe and Al oxide contents.
The evolution of organic matter sources in soil is related to climate and vegetation dynamics in the past recorded in paleoenvironmental Quaternary deposits such as peatlands. For this reason, a Histosol of the mineralotrophic peatland from the Pau-de-Fruta Special Protection Area -SPA, Espinhaço Meridional, State of Minas Gerais, was described and characterized to evidence the soil constituent materials and properties as related to changes in environmental conditions, supported by the isotopic and elementary characterization of soil C and N and 14 C ages. Samples were collected in a depression at 1,350 m asl, where Histosols are possibly more developed due to the great thickness (505 cm). Nowadays, the area is colonized by vegetation physiognomies of the Cerrado Biome, mainly rocky and wet fields (Campo Rupestre and Campo Úmido), aside from fragments of Semidecidual Seasonal Forest, called Capões forests. The results this study showed that early the genesis of the analyzed soil profile showed a high initial contribution of mostly herbaceous organic matter before 8,090 ± 30 years BP ( 14 C age). In the lower-mid Holocene, between 8,090 ± 30 years AP ( 14 C age) to ± 4,100 years BP (interpolated age), the vegetation gradually became more woody, with forest expansion, possibly due to increased humidity, suggesting the existence of a more woody Cerrado in the past than at present. Drier climate conditions than the current were concluded ± 2,500 years BP (interpolated age) and that after 430 years BP ( 14 C age) the forest gave way to grassland, predominantly. After the dry season, humidity increased to the current conditions. Due to these climate
The late Quaternary evolution of central-eastern Brazil has been under-researched.Questions remain as to the origin of the Cerrado, a highly endangered biome, and other types of vegetation, such as the Capões -small vegetation islands of semi-deciduous and mountain forests. We investigated the factors that influenced the expansion and contraction of the Cerrado and Capões during the late Quaternary (last ~35 ka), using a multi-proxy approach: stable isotopes (δ 13 C, δ 15 N), geochemistry, pollen, and multivariate statistics derived from a peat core (Pinheiro mire, Serra do Espinhaço Meridional). Five major shifts in precipitation, temperature, vegetation and landscape stability occurred at different timescales. Our study revealed that changes in the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) seem to have been coeval with these shifts: from late glacial maximum to mid-Holocene the SACZ remained stationed near (~29.6 to ~16.5k cal a BP) and over (~16.5 to ~6.1k cal a BP) the study area, providing humidity to the region. This challenges previous research which suggested that climate was drier for this time period. At present, the Capões are likely to be a remnant of a more humid climate; meanwhile, the Cerrado biome seems to have stablished in the late Holocene, after ~3.1k cal a BP.
SUMMARYPeatlands are soil environments that store carbon and large amounts of water, due to their composition (90 % water), low hydraulic conductivity and a spongelike behavior. It is estimated that peat bogs cover approximately 4.2 % of the Earth's surface and stock 28.4 % of the soil carbon of the planet. Approximately 612 000 ha of peatlands have been mapped in Brazil, but the peat bogs in the Serra do Espinhaço Meridional (SdEM) were not included. The objective of this study was to map the peat bogs of the northern part of the SdEM and estimate the organic matter pools and water volume they stock. The peat bogs were pre-identified and mapped by GIS and remote sensing techniques, using ArcGIS 9.3, ENVI 4.5 and GPS Track Maker Pro software and the maps validated in the field. Six peat bogs were mapped in detail (1:20,000 and 1:5,000) by transects spaced 100 m and each transect were determined every 20 m, the UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinates, depth and samples collected for characterization and determination of organic matter, according to the Brazilian System of Soil Classification. In the northern part of SdEM, 14,287.55 ha of peatlands were mapped, distributed over 1,180,109 ha, representing 1.
