Al inicio de su introducción, la autora aclara: "Before I begin, what «courtesan» means must be defined. In the Renaissance, the word «courtesan» or «cortigiana» is used as a euphemism for «prosti-tute», and the cream of the profession is the cortigiana onesta or the dama servida in Spain. In this study, the term «courtesan» is used to describe women whom we would today call prostitutes, as well as those who cohabit with men not their legal husbands. In this way, outright prostitutes, as well as concubines, clandestine prostitutes, and pícaras are all referred to as courtesans in this book" (p. 1).
