Das Gemeinsame dieser Verbindungen wurde besonders deutlich im Vergleich mit dem von Wiblstcitter und Waser2) hergestellten Cyclo-octatetraen Dieses ,,sollte wie das Benzol ,,gesiittigten" Charakter besitzen, wahrend die tatsiichlichen Beobachtungen es als Analogon der ungesiittigten Kohlenwasserstoffe kennzeichnen," schreibt P. Jacobson3) und bemerkt weiterhin : ersichtlich, warum sich das Cyclo-octatetraen von ihm so verschieden verhiilt." Durch diese Feststellung wird auf die besondere Schwierigkeit hingewiesen, die sich allen Versuchen, in einer symbolischen Formel den aromatischen Charakter zum Ausdruck zu bringen, entgegenstellt.Den einzigen glucklichen Versuch in dieser Richtung brachte der auf Bamberger4) zuruckgehende Vorschlag, der die ,,aromatischen" Ringe als hexazentrische Systeme unter Annahme hoherer Valenzstufen fur die Hetero-Atome auffasst.,,Es ist also, wenn man das Benzol nach ZCekuZd formuliert, kein struktureller Grund BenzolThiazol PyrazolIn neuerer Zeit hat E . HiickeE5) in seinen umfassenden Studien uber die Stcuktur der ungesiittigten und aromatischen Verbindungen diese Bedeutung der Zahl sechs quantentheoretisch gedeutet. ,,Das Auftreten der Zahl 2 + 4 = 6 fur eine abgeschlossene Elektronengruppe bei den Ringen hat denselben Grund wie das Auftreten der Zahl 2 + 6 = 8 fur eine abgeschlossene Elektronengruppe (,,Oktett") bei den Atomen."
