It is mentioned that the streaming-potential E/P and the volume of liquid transported by electro-osmosis v/i are equal, independent of the structure of the diaphragm and independent of its surface conductance. The value of these ratios which, in the absence of surface-conductance equals E C /~ nvl diminishes when surface-conductance is present. This decrease can be accurately taken into account when the diaphragm consists of a single capillary of constant diameter. In the case of real diaphragms, consisting of a network of capillaries of different shape and dimensions the correction factor for surface-conductance cannot be computed! It has been common practice to estimate the correction factor from the ratio of the observed to the calculated electric resistance of the diaphragm. This procedure is shown to be erroneous, leading to values of the C-potential that are essentially too low.
Polypropylene has been fractionated by two methods of column fractionation. One, a gradient elution fractionation a t 150 "C., fractionates according to molecular weight only: the other, elution with one solvent a t increasing temperatures separates also according to crystallinity. The two methods are compared and it is shown that polypropylene is best characterized by applying the two methods successively. It is demonstrated that fractions obtained in this way between 60 and 95°C. in an increasing temperature fractionation consist of material possessing a wide range in molecular weight and in crystallinity.
It has been demonstrated that the molecular weight distribution of some isotactic polypropylene samples can be described by a modified ROSIN-RAB~MLER distribution equation : in which I(M) is the cumulative weight fraction of molecules having a molecular weight less than or equal to M and Me and b are constants for a particular sample. The width of the molecular-weight distribution is represented by the value of b. The quantity Q -which is the more conventional measure for this width, can be expressed as a function of b for b > 1. It is shown that for a detailed comparison of polymer samples knowledge of Q has to be supplemented with information on the type of distribution.
