Hill-country agricultural research in New Zealand is conducted on hillslopes that are being continually developed by erosion processes. Since interpretation of sequential aerial photographs permits accurate dating and delineation of erosion scars of different age and cultural changes, hillslopes can be divided into physiographic areas with different erosion histories and corresponding depths of soil. Pasture measurement sites can then be selected accordingly.
