This paper discusses the current status of Mediterranean forests. The general features of Mediterranean forests are examined. The main threats linked to Mediterranean forests are discussed. This paper concludes with the consideration of the importance of the forest benefits and the need for forest conservation.
I salici, grazie agli incrementi legnosi particolarmente elevati, sono degli importanti produttori di biomassa, e danno luogo ad assortimenti legnosi speciali molto utili anche nell’economia dell’azienda agricola. Per le sue caratteristiche di flessibilità sia i fusti che i rami dei salici sono sempre stati utilizzati fin dall’antichità per l’intreccio di contenitori, la cui utilizzazione è stata limitata solo di recente dalla comparsa della plastica.
Il salice è l’albero dell’energia femminile, e nella mitologia celtica era consacrato alla luna. Anche durante il medioevo si vedeva uno stretto legame tra questa pianta e la luna, tanto da rendere i salici gli alberi preferiti per la fabbricazione della “scopa delle streghe”. Ancora oggi si trovano in commercio “bacchette magiche” e talismani in legno di salice che dovrebbero favorire la capacità di immedesimazione, aiutare la salute e donare
protezione a tutta la famiglia. Tale caratteristica “magica” del salice si trova anche in culture totalmente diverse dalla nostra, come quella giapponese degli Ainu, che utilizzano il legno di salice per la produzione di sostituti antropomorfi delle divinità cui affidare le preghiere.
Attualmente le utilizzazioni più comuni sono per falegnameria comune, attrezzi sportivi, zoccoli, imballaggi, fiammiferi, compensati, pasta legno da carta e cellulosa. Lo studio di un rilancio del salice, indirizzando la relativa produzione tramite selezione genetica, renderebbe possibile anche in Italia l’inizio, sempre rimandato, della promozione di una “salicicoltura da legno”, come avviene da tempo in diversi altri paesi emergenti dal punto di vista industriale
