Underutilized/orphan legumes provide food and nutritional security to resource-poor rural populations during periods of drought and extreme hunger, thus, saving millions of lives. The Leguminaceae, which is the third largest flowering plant family, has approximately 650 genera and 20,000 species and are distributed globally. There are various protein-rich accessible and edible legumes, such as soybean, cowpea, and others; nevertheless, their consumption rate is far higher than production, owing to ever-increasing demand. The growing global urge to switch from an animal-based protein diet to a vegetarian-based protein diet has also accelerated their demand. In this context, underutilized legumes offer significant potential for food security, nutritional requirements, and agricultural development. Many of the known legumes like Mucuna spp., Canavalia spp., Sesbania spp., Phaseolus spp., and others are reported to contain comparable amounts of protein, essential amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), dietary fiber, essential minerals and vitamins along with other bioactive compounds. Keeping this in mind, the current review focuses on the potential of discovering underutilized legumes as a source of food, feed and pharmaceutically valuable chemicals, in order to provide baseline data for addressing malnutrition-related problems and sustaining pulse needs across the globe. There is a scarcity of information about underutilized legumes and is restricted to specific geographical zones with local or traditional significance. Around 700 genera and 20,000 species remain for domestication, improvement, and mainstreaming. Significant efforts in research, breeding, and development are required to transform existing local landraces of carefully selected, promising crops into types with broad adaptability and economic viability. Different breeding efforts and the use of biotechnological methods such as micro-propagation, molecular markers research and genetic transformation for the development of underutilized crops are offered to popularize lesser-known legume crops and help farmers diversify their agricultural systems and boost their profitability.

Hesperidin is abundantly present as a flavanone glycoside in citrus fruits. The citrus peels, seeds, pulp, and cell and membrane residues contain a high amount of hesperidin. It has received scientific momentum lately as it offers several health benefits upon consumption, as it possesses antioxidant, anti-hypocholesteric, antitumor, anticancer, antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic properties, and so on. It is used in the treatment of various diseases and disorders such as type-II diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological and psychiatric disorders. Various extraction methods such as solvent extraction, cold extraction, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and supercritical fluid extraction have been employed globally to obtain the maximum yield of hesperidin, which is also environment-friendly and cost-effective. The food industries produce a huge amount of citrus residue after the preparation of juices, jellies, jams, etc. These byproduct wastes are used to extract hesperidin. This review aims at highlighting the updated and scientific information about the nutritional, phytochemical, and biological activities of hesperidin; various classical and modern extraction methods; and their impact on the yield of hesperidin and health implications of hesperidin.

Modernization of the agricultural production system led to a significant increase in annual food production intended to meet the ever-growing consumer demand. In many countries, most of the food grains produced is stored for contingency and regular supply. These stored grains, in general, are directly or indirectly infested by insects, resulting in severe grain damages and storage losses, thus, causing a threat to food safety and security. Although a variety of insect management options, such as physical, mechanical, biological, and chemical methods, are available, fumigation has been practiced for decades in storage. However, opportunities for fumigation are narrowing after the phase-out of methyl bromide. Besides, safe food and health concerns paved the path for green chemistry and non-chemical management practices. This review includes the list of stored-grain insects and their detection methods. The different management strategies such as the modern storage structures (hermetic and low-pressure storages), modified or controlled storage atmosphere, application of ozone as fumigant, irradiation, and physical options are presented. Further, the details on sustainable biological options, such as semiochemicals, natural enemies, biopesticides, and entomopathogenic nematodes, are supplemented. The use of inert dusts as grain protectant and in combination with the biological entity is included. Studies on alternative fumigants', novel management options, such as molecular biology tools (RNAi and CRISPR) and nanotechnology in stored grain protection, are also highlighted. This review helps the reader to understand the overall factors affecting grain storage and the different options to manage the insects causing storage losses.
