Summary Serological studies on the occurrence and spread of reovirus infections in Bavarian pig herds 500 pig sera from pigs sent to slaughter from Bavarian herds were examined by the HI test for the occurrence and distribution of reovirus infection. The material comprised: (a) 230 sera from the Munich abattoir (1968/69). (b) 156 sera from Bavarian abattoirs (1968/69). (c) 114 sera from Bavarian abattoirs (1970/71). Results showed that reovirus infection in pigs in Bavaria is very widespread. 47.8% of the sera reacted with serotype 1, 38.8% with serotype 2 and 68% with serotype 3. A study of antibody titres of 1: 40 and above in the sera showed clearly that particular serotypes predominate at times in particular localities. It was also clear that infections with serotype 2 have markedly increased in recent years. The significance of reovirus infections in pig herds is discussed in relation to their possible role in the development of rearing and “factor” diseases.
