By adopting the theory of planned behavior, this study tried to predict human resources managers' (N = 79) intentions toward unstructured and structured interview techniques. Managers evaluated case descriptions of both techniques and were interviewed about their own practices. The data revealed stronger intentions toward unstructured interviewing than toward structured interviewing, which was consistent with their own practices in selecting staff, which appeared to be rather unstructured. l. Ajzen's (1991) theory appeared to be a useful framework for predicting managers' intentions. In particular, attitudes and subjective norms were predictive of intentions to engage in either method. Only intentions toward the unstructured case were related to managers' actual behavior.

We present an approach for P-wave modeling in inhomogeneous transversely isotropic media with tilted symmetry axis (TTI media), suitable for anisotropic reverse-time migration. The proposed approach is based on wave equations derived from first principles — the equations of motion and Hooke’s law — under the acoustic TI approximation. Consequently, no assumptions are made about the spatial variation of medium parameters. A rotation of the stress and strain tensors to a local coordinate system, aligned with the TI-symmetry axis, makes it possible to benefit from the simple and sparse form of the TI-elastic tensor in that system. The resulting wave equations can be formulated either as a set of five first-order or as a set of two second-order partial differential equations. For the constant-density case, the second-order TTI wave equations involve mixed and nonmixed second-order spatial derivatives with respect to global, nonrotated coordinates. We propose a numerical implementation of these equations using high-order centered finite differences. To minimize modeling artifacts related to the use of centered first-derivative operators, we use discrete second-derivative operators for the nonmixed second-order spatial derivatives and repeated discrete first-derivative operators for the mixed derivatives. Such a combination of finite-difference operators leads to a stable wave propagator, provided that the operators are designed properly. In practice, stability is achieved by slightly weighting down terms that contain mixed derivatives. This has a minor, practically negligible, effect on the kinematics of wave propagation. The stability of the presented scheme in inhomogeneous TTI models with rapidly varying anisotropic symmetry axis direction is demonstrated with numerical examples.

S U M M A R Y If a sharp edge occurs in a reflector, the wavefield predicted by geometric ray theory shows shadow boundaries between illuminated zones and shadow zones. One may correct for these discontinuities in the wavefield by adding edge waves as introduced by Klem-Musatov. In this paper the edge wave is analysed as a solution of a parabolic differential equation that describes transverse diffusion between the illuminated zone and the shadow zone across the shadow boundary. Here, the edge wave is described constructively in terms of dynamic ray tracing, thereby indicating how it can be implemented in a ray tracing program when the latter is equipped with the facility of dynamic ray tracing.

In isotropic ray tracing, the ray approximation to the wavefield undergoes a phase shift when the ray crosses a caustic. The cumulative number of such phase shifts along a ray is usually called the KMAH index. The sign of these phase shifts is prescribed by the sign of the angular frequency in combination with the sign convention used for the Fourier transformation. In isotropic media the KMAH index always increases by one or by two, depending on the type of caustic crossed. For (quasi‐)shear waves in anisotropic media the KMAH index may decrease. This is the case if the associated slowness sheet is locally concave in one or two of its principal directions of curvature.
