29Si MAS‐NMR, and Ca‐EXAFS experiments have been conducted on calcium silicate hydrates (C‐S‐Hs) with structure derived from wollastonite. Crystalline compounds (wollastonite, xonotlite, hillebrandite, foshagite, 1.1 nm and 1.4 nm tobermorites, and jennite) and C‐S‐H were synthesized and characterized. 29Si NMR provides information on silicate chains and EXAFS on calcium environment. The refined EXAFS values are in agreement with XRD data, except for tobermorite. The calcium order in C‐S‐H (C/S molar ratio from 0.7 to 1.4) is similar to that of tobermorite but different from that of jennite. Structural models of C‐S‐H are discussed.

The deposition rate and film quality of In,O,-SnO, (ITO) transparent electrodes processed by sputtering are improved when using dense sputtering targets. Unfortunately, IT0 ceramics do not sinter easily. It is shown that addition of TiO, (<1 wt%) to IT0 greatly increases densification without degrading electrical properties of sputtered films. The influence of ZrO, and SiO, was also investigated.

Fracture toughness of ZrO2‐toughened alumina could he increased by macroscopic interfaces, such as those existing in laminated composites. In this work, tape casting was used to produce A/A or A/B laminates, where A and B can be Al2O3, Al2O3/5 vol% ZrO2, and Al2O3/l0 vol% ZrO2. An increase of toughness is observed, even in the Al2O3/Al2O3 laminates.
