Background: Gunshot injury of the hip joint was reported to constitute 2–17% of all extremity firearm injuries. However, there are few studies in the literature related to gunshot injuries of the hip joint. The aim of the current study was to present the results of 10 cases treated with arthroplasty following a gunshot injury to the hip joint together with the recommended treatment algorithm. Methods: Patients with a previous medical history of hip joint region gunshot injury who underwent total hip arthroplasty were retrospectively evaluated. Those with incomplete medical records or who were lost to follow-up were excluded. Patients were classified according to the severity of the previous gunshot injury to the hip joint region. Harris hip score (HHS) and Short Form-12 quality of life score were the main outcome measurements. Postoperative complications encountered during follow-up were recorded. Results: The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 29.9 years. The mean preoperative HHS was 25.2 points and it was 65.8 at the final follow-up. Patients with bullet fragments in the hip joint, classified as group 1, had better HHS, whereas those with contaminated hip joint with intestinal flora, classified as group 3, had worst HHS. Conclusion: Hip arthroplasty after hip joint gunshot injury is a good treatment choice in young patients to reduce pain and regain functions. However, very high infection rates can be seen in patients with accompanying intestinal injury.

This study aims to investigate the biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of daptomycin, gentamicin, vancomycin and teicoplanin at commonly-used dose intervals added to polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in vitro. Materials and methods: This prospective study was conducted between February 2016 and June 2016. Antibiotics were added to PMMA at doses frequently used in clinical practice. The antibiotic doses added were teicoplanin (2 g, 3 g, 4 g), gentamicin (0.5 g, 0.75 g, 1 g), daptomycin (0.5 g.) and vancomycin (2 g, 3 g, 4 g). Standard cement balls (10 mm) were created. Activated L929 mouse fibroblast cell culture was used for incubation. Agar diffusion, Cell Proliferation Kit II (XTT) test and electron microscope investigations were performed to examine biocompatibility and cytotoxicity. Results: In the cytotoxicity test, teicoplanin at 4 g and daptomycin at 0.5 g doses were observed to cause reductions in viability percentages. The same doses caused 20% and 20-40% cell lysis indices during the agar diffusion test. On electron microscope images, cytotoxic effects in fibroblast cells and involvement with the surface of cement balls were observed. Conclusion: Gentamicin, vancomycin and teicoplanin were observed to be non-toxic and biocompatible at commonly-used dose intervals. Teicoplanin at 4 g and daptomycin at 0.5 g doses were identified to be cytotoxic and not biocompatible. When selecting antibiotics to be added to bone cement, care should be taken that the antibiotic is non-toxic and biocompatible.

Objectives: It is important to determine the risks of mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of femoral artery calcification on mortality risk in patients with cemented partial hip prosthesis. Methods:The study included 145 patients (≥65-years-old) with cemented partial hip prosthesis operated following hip fracture. Patients were divided into two groups: Group (1) included those without femoral artery calcification, and Group (2) with femoral artery calcifications observed on direct radiography. Age, gender, duration of hospitalization, time of death and follow-up duration, ASA score, anesthesia type, fracture type, complication and time of operation for patients were compared between two groups.Results: After exclusion of certain patients due to lack of necessary information in their documents, a total of 116 patients were investigated. The mean age of patients was 81.52±6.82. Mean follow-up duration was 35.39 (range: 0-76) months. Three out of 116 patients died after some complications during surgery. Mean time of death after surgery was 21.21 months in Group 1 and 23.86 months in Group 2 (p=0.628). Conclusion:The results of this study showed that femoral artery calcification in patients with cemented prosthesis due to hip fracture at advanced age had no effect on mortality. However, there is a need for advanced studies with larger patient groups.

SUMMARYObjective: Internet and social media are used at a significant rate in the decision process related to health of patients. In our study we aimed to investigate the socio-demographic characteristics, and internet use, attitude and behavior oforthopedics and traumatology patients according to diagnosis. Method: Patients filled in a face-to-face survey form during clinical examination. The surveys were completed in the following provinces, from east to west, Şırnak, Sivas, Yozgat, Hatay, Adana and Çanakkale.According to diagnosis patients were divided into subgroups of arthroplasty, arthroscopic knee surgery, ankle surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, spinal surgery, trauma, pediatric orthopedic, hand surgery and microsurgery, and soft tissue and bone tumor patients. Additionally patients were asked whether they had internet at home and whether they were social media users. The patients were asked if they had researched their disease or doctor on the internet. Results: 600 patients who participated in the study 287 were male (47.8%) and 313 were female (52.2%). The mean age of patients was 40.4 ± 21.6 years (0-91 years) with the mean age of males 37.9 ± 21.1 (0-85) years and mean age of females 42.6 ± 21.9 (0-91) years.Evaluating the relationship between internet use; disease group (arthroplasty, arthroscopy, spine, pediatric orthopedic, etc.), type of hospital (university, provincial state, county state), place of residence, educational level, age and gender are examined, there were a statistically difference all of groups. Of the 600 patients participating in the research 304 (50.7%) had a home internet connection and 234 people (39%) said they actively used social media. Of the 600 patients, 107 (17.8%) reported they researched their disease with the help of the internet and only 56 patients (9.3%) reported researching their doctor with the help of the internet. Conclucion: Popularity of internet use has increased the internet use to obtain information about healthcare. Knowing the frequency of internet use by patients will aid in developing resources to inform patients. In the future developing social media and the internet will continue to be integrated into health services and orthopedics to guide patient decisions. It appears that the most important source of information about health remains health personnel.
