This paper describes the compilation of the ACTRES Parallel Corpus, an English–Spanish translation corpus built at the Department of Modern Languages at the University of León (Spain) by the ACTRES research group. The computerisation of the corpus was carried out in collaboration with Knut Hofland and Øystein Reigem, from the Department of Culture, Language and Information Technology, Aksis, at the UNIFOB/University of Bergen (Norway). The corpus is conceived as a powerful tool for cross-linguistic research in the fields of Contrastive Analysis and Descriptive Translation Studies. It was the need to bridge the gap between these disciplines and to extend applications that encouraged the building of a parallel corpus as a suitable tool to achieve these goals. This paper focusses on the practical aspects of building the corpus. A brief account of the research which prompted this endeavour precedes the description of this process. 4 4 This paper is an account of the building of the ACTRES Parallel Corpus, so no empirical results from research done on the basis of the corpus are reported here. This paper describes the construction of three corpora, intended for use in social science research, comprising English-language, Frenchlanguage and Norwegian-language blogs related to the topic of climate change. The approach, techniques and lessons learnt should be applicable for creating other topically-focused blog corpora.
The SIFT project is aimed at developing an advanced text retrieval system possessing the features of high modularity, high portability, possibilities for integration with word processing systems and a flexible user interface. Possible applications for such a system would be found wherever any sizable collection of information requires efficient retrieval. The SIFT system is mainly designed to solve the problems of searching in free, i.e. unstructured, text but extensive functions for dealing with structured information are also offered.The SIFT project is based on former experience in the use of other retrieval systems, particularly the Norwegian version of the British STATUS system, NOVA*STATUS, a system which has found application in various public agencies and at all Norwegian universities.The SIFT project was initiated on January 1, 1980, and a prototype version of the system will be implemented on a NORD computer towards the end of 1981. The final product will be made available free of charge.This presentation will treat the structure, characteristics and applications of the SIFT system.

Vi har begge bitt oss fast på tross av alle reorganiseringer og navneendringer. Men-Knut har vaert her lengst. Han er den eldste dinosauren. Jeg er Lillefot. Han er Storefot. OK, Knut-fra én dinosaur til en annen: Gratulerer med overstått. Vi to har vaert her så lenge at vi har sett de rareste ting-f.eks en datamaskin stor som et fir-dobbelt garderobeskap, med en kraft tilsvarende en lommekalkulator. Ja, dette bildet viser ikke vår maskin, altså. Det var også andre som hadde slike PDP-11-er. Men vi hadde samme sort. Den er i grunnen en dinosaur den også. Kjempestor kropp. Bitteliten hjerne. Uten sammenlikning med de tilstedevaerende dinosaurer, naturligvis.
