Es ist der Frage nach der Bedeutung des Kreatins und des Kreatinins für den tierischen Organismus ergangen, wie so manchem anderen wichtigen Problem der Biologie: je näher wir mit der Häufung des experimentellen Materials und der Verbesserung der Methodik des Rätsels Lösung zu kommen schienen, um so ferner rückte das Ziel, bis schließlich, statt des einen Problems eine Vielheit voneinander fast ganz unabhängiger Fragen uns gegenüberstand. Erst in den letzten Jahren haben die neuen Ideen und exakten Experimente einiger Forscher dem alten Problem neue Richtung und neue Grundlagen gegeben. Es wird daher nicht überflüssig sein, auf Grund des so gewonnenen Standpunkts eine Sichtung des reichhaltigen Materials vorzunehmen.Als in der Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts Lieb ig das Kreatin als einen regelmäßigen Bestandteil des Muskels entdeckte und fast gleichzeitig das regelmäßige Vorkommen von Kreatinin im Harn sichergestellt hatte, schien das Problem relativ einfach zu liegen. Der leichte Übergang von Kreatin in Kreatinin, besonders bei saurer Reaktion, war bekannt. Nichts lag also näher, als anzunehmen, daß das Kreatin im Muskel gebildet oder abgelagert werde und nach Umwandlung in Kreatinin, sei es im Muskel selbst oder in einem anderen Organ, zur Ausscheidung kommt.
